With the loud “krakk” I wonder if something broke, but I suppose it was likely a crack of electricity. In any case all three frames today are magnificent, but the last one in particular sums up the whole story. I love it.
I thought upon reading today’s strip that the KRAKK was the sound of the ladder giving way and causing Tabby to fall; but I see that most of the commentators up to this point interpret it as a gunshot from a rifle, perhaps fired by Montana Joe. That is certainly possible, and it would explain where Joe went: to fetch his rifle from wherever he kept it. It would, however, be a case of sheer luck that he noticed Angus up there in time to fire, unless he had seen Angus ascending…. It could also have been Gertie or even Sparkle shooting, I suppose.
My first thought was it was Blackjack again. But then Sam would have to join Tracy in the coverup and I don’t think Mike & Joe want to expand on that. It’s not good for business. Therefore, I think it was Joe and his rifle.
Great strip! Now – the question is what (or who) took him down.(I’m betting it’s one of the Munro Bros. That’s what Tabby gets for peeking behind Venus’ screen.)
Great Scott! That’s no way to fly, Tabby. If you want to be a bird, don’t flap your arms, just hold ’em straight out and glide. Show him, George. Watch this, Tabby. Tabby?
“Besides, it would be too trite a device to use, considering how recently it was done.”.That’s a thought I’m having with the increased frequency that Tracy has been using “Ye Gods!”
“One hand for the ship, and one hand for yourself.” That’s something I thought was basic for anybody trying to climb tall structures. Angus had no safety harness, so he would always need one hand to hold onto the tower. I can’t be sure, but I think I see him using both hands to aim the gun in panel #2. The “Krak” was his own gun and the fact is that his aim was spoiled by his own fall. Probably tried to shoot as he began falling, hoping to get the detective as his last dying act.
Montana Joe used to own a rodeo. He is an expert trick sharpshooter and bronco buster. He could have easily picked off Angus with one Krakk of his rifle.
Whoever shot, it was a mixed blessing for Tracy. Angus was obviously connected to the Blackhearts. Now any information he had will not be known by Tracy. Remember, we, the readers, know more about Venus and the Blackhearts than the Tracyville police. As far as I can discern, Tracy knows nothing of Melies,Venus, or the Munro Brothers (doubtful that they even know Flash is aboard the Space Coupe) even though they have been in the strip for a while now. Tracy was just starting to get clues from Clark but with Angus dead kand without further information, Tracy’s investigation into the Blackhearts seems to be put back to square one.
Please please please let him have a vintage Gould ironic death in which he falls into the hay barn and is impaled on a pitchfork right next to Sparkplug!
Krakk? bullwhip? nah, that would have to be a lonnnng whip, but if it’s the Blackhearts, wouldn’t Tracy still be in danger if it’s a sniper. They must be fans of Sounds O’Plenty too. Everyone who was listening knew Angus was there and that more than likely Tracy would show up.
Tracy […] has not had to lift a finger as this case solved itself around him.
I don’t buy that. He was poring through files in an unprecedented way not to long ago. The case never would have solved itself if he hadn’t gathered evidence of the connections.
As much as I wish it was a Space Coupe cannon responsible for Tabby’s fall, I think we’ll have to settle for a more conventional weapon. Or maybe Tabby was standing on a ledge or platform that simply gave way?
436, just “go pro”. It only cost you a couple of dollars and puts you in some great company! (Me, Gweedo, Bassmanbob, Mattie, avenger09, SDM, and a few others, to mention a few!) It helps them run and pay for the site; they keep the ads out, and it might keep you from spending your entire paycheck at the track! As for me, I gave up my MENSA membership dues to support this site!

It wasn’t Montana Joe. It was the one-armed man. Or maybe Lt. Gerard.

My first impression of the Krakk was of part of the tower giving way, but perhaps I was mistaken. I’m sure we’ll find out tomorrow ;)
Chris Sherlock over 10 years ago
My guess is, the krakk was from the gun Angus had and the backfire caused him to fall.
