Well, that clears up the question of how Tracy could leave the US to find Annie – she’s back in the states. Can’t wait to see who the “reliable source” is.I am confused though, by the Istanbul – Constantinople byplay. Is it to suggest the Asp is so old that the city was known as Constantinople then?
I doubt it. Both strips are owned and copywrited by the Tribune Syndicate in the same way Captain America and Iron Man are copywrited by Marvel Comics (now a part of Disney
Cool…..the normal populace gets shoved aside for the benefit of one rich person. I love the storyline EXCEPT for this part…..it really surprises me it was included because in real life it’s the kind of incident newspapers spotlight and win awards for, and heads roll afterwards, lol
Frankly, I don’t see what the problem is. It would be one thing if they were taking Tracy off to Argentina or something, but hey: there’s a kidnap victim, they have credible information she’s in that city. To be honest, I’m not even sure why they were reluctant to assign Tracy to the case; it’s his jurisdiction anyway.
As I’ve just learned Constantinople is Konstantinoúpolis (Κωνσταντινούπολις) in Greek (City of Constantine), so it contains that “polis” word which is also the root word of “police” that we were discussing on a recent Sunday. Some people think that the “bul” of Instanbul is a variation of the “-ple”, but others cite a completely different Turkish origin.
…won’t there be a copyrite problem with this story line!
On the contrary, I suspect that Tribune Media Services (TMS), which owns both Dick Tracy and Annie more or less ordered this story up so as to promote the upcoming Annie movie (due out at Christmas, so they won’t want this Tracy adventure to end too soon).
When the Annie strip ended, four years ago this coming Friday, the last panel read, “And this is where we leave our Annie. For Now—” so we are finally completing the cliffhanger from then.
Sam, don’t mess with the Asp. He does not have a sense of humor (or at least not one that anybody would like).I, too, am wondering who Daddy’s “very reliable” city source could be; maybe the Mole?
Sorry for my spelling error(s) Gweedo. The science museum was fun! Two versions of the outside of the building, dead man left on the stage as the entire police dept. looked on, airplane hanging by a wire on the cockpit, etc.
The last we saw of Annie, she was “Somewhere in Guatemala” (Annie, June 13, 2010). We don’t know where the Butcher of the Balkans took her after that. Nor do we know where Warbucks and company have searched for her. How she got to Argentina is unknown. And how she came to the U.S. and why she is being hidden in Tracy’s town is also unknown.
Nice to know that the Mayor can so easily be bought off, and that Pat and the rest of the MCU/MCS is so willing to drop a live case like he blackhearts to waste their time on a rich man who lost track of his little girl… wouldnt it be GREAT if annie turned out to be VENUS!!!!
If I had the money, and my daughter was missing, I would do anything it took to get her back. And now that I think about it, we saw Daddy Warbucks present the checkbook, but we never saw the Mayor take the check. We just assumed she took it because, let’s face it, we’ve become a bunch of cynics as it applies to the rich and the government. Whether she took it or not may be revealed later on, but as for now, I’m adopting an “optimistic pessimism” view – hope for the best, but expect the worst.
I wouldn’t mind having a Jessica-style reveal for Venus. Aside from Moon Maid and Lizz, Joe did an amazing job rendering her. But for that to work, they may have to use a similar gimmick they did with the Broadway Bates arc, where a certain fowl fiend (and his chiropteran arch-nemesis) were hinted at, but not actually named. If that’s the case, I can’t wait to see how they pull that rabbit out the hat.
As far as the Argentina/Guatemala thing goes, I’m guessing that when Annie and the Butcher were dropped off at Guatemala, they did a bit of travelling through Central and South Americas, with a possible spotting in Argentina. That’s where the trail went cold. Again, it’s up to Team Tracy to weave this tale. We got all summer, so let the speculations fly where they may!
They Might Be Giants covered the song, Istanbul (Not Constantinople), on their 1990 album, Flood. The offbeat guitar and accordion duo regaled the alternative underground in the ‘80s and later crossed over via pop songcraft and children’s music.
How do they know that Daddy Warbucks and his two weirdo accomplices aren’t child predators? Kind of like Charles MAnson going to the police station asking for directions to Sharon Tate’s house.
It’s understandable how desperate Warbuck’s would naturally beMany months it had been since his daughter he did seeBut Tracy should never agree To be part of a such a conspiracyTo trample on the rights of thoseWho pay their taxes with nothing to showVacation time he should have usedInstead of on the city dimeYou scratch my back I’ll scratch yoursSadly this happens all the time!

I wonder who the “very reliable source” is and whether we know him. Apparently Tracy doesn’t know him.
