Ma Silo is making this innocent cover-story visit to the movies into something more by adding her highly suspect broach (brooch) to Annie’s Little Black Dress (it’s also black at Comics Kingdom, so apparently this is a specified color, special for the occasion). Will Ma Silo fink out Annie and Tracy?
The black and white version of the strip at Chron.com also has her dress colored black. I checked back at previous strips where the colorist made her dress red. The b/w version always left it white. So there must be some significance to the dress being black.
Another observation: the shoes. In both the Chronicle and the Comics Kingdom versions, they’re white. The GoComics colorist made them blue. So the color of the shoes is not significant, other than that they enhance the significance of the black dress.
The color of Annie’s dress and or shoes today. seems at best, just a minor distraction ! (?)What’s of greater interest, indeed puzzling, is the need to select the movies (a place usually ‘crowded’ with people) - to have a private, secret conversation ?One provoking the unseemly ‘conjecture’ (here yesterday and on the Comics Curmudgeon site) of a grown man taking a 12 year old to the movies !
Seems like another walk or two in the near countryside (e.g. Aug. 1 and 2) might more easily - have allowed several private discussions ?
Or say, another innocent meeting at the Jr Commandos HQ (like on July 28, 29 and 30) ? The ‘Loose Lips’ then, never seemed to have sunk any ‘escape’ ships, or provided endangering information slips ! (?)
They all seemed quite normal at the time, particularly after Annie’s visit with those cookies at the hospital ! A visit that never seemed to raise the hackles of Axel or the town folk(?)
As JonathanK seemed to imply, a better “CONVERSATION” piece, might have been Tracy with ‘teenager’ - Nellie Wheaton, had she been there on a farm ;- )
davidf42 already checked that out. See his comment, several posts above yours. The B&W version left the dress white, for the colorists to put in red. This time, the original art team deliberately made it black.
I can’t wait to see how the two of them will be able to have a private conversation in a movie theater without disturbing the others in the crowd. I’m sure a hick little town (island) like theirs doesn’t have an 8 screen duplex! On another note it’d be great plot advancement if while in the theater the Blob attacks them and after they escape they get attacked by Triffids! THAT would create a great amount of Buzz and excitement!
avenger09 if u read this I am sorry for rubbing you the wrong way and I promise that will not happen again. I just hope that you can forgive me. I am being sincere sir, john … and on another note, Back in that day if it were in the 40’s it was okay for that sort of thing. Even today not all men are evil animals. I raised girls and when they were young I never let anyone hurt or lust after any kid, and I was and still am a child (and dog) protector. On my Facebook thing I have many ladies (some ornery some not so) that were children that are my friends and still look up to me. I only say this because most think that kid and grown up together spells uh oh bad. My family and I try to look for the positive and good in this evil and bad world. What helps is the area where our farm is has only about 1500 customers for our water company (the Albert Gallitan Municipal Authority) Don’t think we’re naive because it is obvious there are crack heads and all sorts of addicts around here and everywhere and they try to avoid me.
We lived and worked in Westchester county Bedford Hills NY for years and now in a little hick town USA for over 20 years and it is a better life when you are in the bank or grocery store and you left your keys in the switch and there has never been a car stolen, no daylight robberies. When I left New York there were 10 claw marks where they dragged me out of town. I loved (still do) North Salem and Bedford Hills New York. My last job up there was in Putmam county near Brewster (Marlowe Thomas / That Girl) where the water is super clean and some of the best fishing in the eastern United States. I lived there when the Mets got beat by the Yankees in the world series. The year before the Mets won the world Series with a little help from Wade Boggs’s error at first in the 6th game. Davy Johnson was my favorite baseball manager , Doc Gooden, Gary Carter, Ron Darling, Darrel Strawberry, Mokey Wilson were some of baseball heroes. Living about 50 miles south of Pittsburgh I must say “lets go Bucks”
As for the comments about Tracy and his rendezvous with child Annie: While the narrative is quite clear what his intentions are, and while the overwhelming majority of encounters between older males and children are innocent, I rank these comments right up there with Tess and Johnny Adonis!.A sophomoric snerk at best.
Jeeze, guys – does Joe have to draw a little arrow box for the caption: “The dress is black”?Joe draws it, Shelley inks it. If it’s in black, let’s take it that it was meant to be black, okay?-Besides if they’re both wearing black, it’ll help them sneak out of the theatre unnoticed.
That Santa gif looks painful. (He could’ve triggered the airbags and car alarm with that impact. Yikes!) Where was that last one – the woman sobbing with a bottle – from? (Man, if I drank, you’d have found me hiding under my desk like that. But I drink Coke, and I don’t look good in a little black dress, so it ain’t gonna happen.)
I seriously doubt anyone on this board would let a young relative of theirs go off alone with an adult male that they don’t know very well.
In fact, according to what the villagers have been saying and what they apparently believe, they all know Officer Tracy very well. He has been their little town’s entire law enforcement agency for years, and if you can’t trust a police officer, who can you trust? Annie, herself, claimed that she had known Officer Tracy for years.

Yep, there’s gonna hit Simmons Corners Stork Club for drinks and dancing…More like the soda fountain, if the town has one.
