Arson is another Tracy villain who was not killed. He was wounded by Tracy firing a machine gun into his hideout. This was early Tracy when it was all blood and guts and tommyguns.
For anyone not familiar or has forgotten 2012, “Treerat” was the online username of Scarlet Sting fan, Davey Mylar. I won’t say more for those who still haven’t read it.
Blaze is constantly startled or amazed by DoubleUp and the convolutions of his thinking. She should be getting used to it by now.
And thanks to our scholarly Neil Wick for reminding us that Davey Mylar was Treerat. I for one had forgotten that and was trying to recall who Treerat had been.
Tomorrow (Tomorrow, Tomorrow, I love ya, Tomorrow) will be the official start of the Annie-Honeymoon bullying story, with some assistance, I think, from the Cardinal! Tomorrow, Tomorrow, I love ya, Tomorrow!
And just as a reminder, Doubleup hasn’t always expressed tender thoughts toward his fellow Scarlet Sting fan. He had no qualms about The Treerat getting shot if it meant saving his own skin.
I actually enjoy the added nuances to the villains we have seen…for me, there is nothing more boring than one-dimensional villains…while we can still boo and hiss Double-Up, this background story makes him a more realistic character….and in the case of characters like Mole, a possible redemption down the line if the writers chose…
We saw Doubleup’s lawyer, Mr. Kleen, a few days ago and now we discover that Doubleup has a background of lawyers getting him out of jams. I can’t help but think the insertion of Mr. Kleen into the plot has something to do with this. As others have said, “Chekhov’s gun….”
I like that Mike and Joe are showing us that even hardened criminals like Sprocket Nitrate and Doubleup can have good qualities. Very good story crafting!

BLESS YOU My Dear, for your thoughtful ‘sensitivity’ and expression of concern, for ALL involved. Almost to the point of contrition.
No need to Worry, it’s likely an ‘emotional’ thing that will pass quietly in time. At least, I hope so . . .You, we, all “speculate” every day, on events and this was just another one of them that got carried away * . . .*Often, perhaps “naturally”, everyone strongly supports their own theories on each strip event,
You’d put forward one on a ‘potential’ relationship between Doubleup and Blaze, I’ve DONE a “Back Search” and found strips of the B-B Eyes group of characters, among them Doubleup and Blaze !*
Of particular interest - will be their “conversation” over drinks, in strip of March 15, 2012
Seems to impact directly (in-directly?) on area of speculation about a possible relation ship.
Mole has served his time and mended his ways. To me, he is an interesting character who has successfully reformed. Doubleup shows no inclination to change, yet I like that his character has gained complexity. Stiletta and Sprocket also gained some depth and dimension over time. Good character development is one of Team Tracy’s many strengths. Doubleup responded to being bullied with violent revenge. Stooping to their level is not the best way to deal with bullies. While Doubleup and Blaze are developing a good working relationship, this is clearly what is shall remain. Doubleup already introduced Blaze to his “new” Ponytail back in January. Blaze chuckled, remarking that Ponytail is not her type. Maybe she prefers the exotic. Someone like Notta?
Thanks to Gweedo, ave09, Night-Gaunt49, Willy007, John Russell, Jonathan K., JPuzzleWhiz and Chris Sherlock for the kind words. Very much appreciated!

Good Morning, everyone.
Doubleup’s uncle Boris in a 1934 arc. What a sweet guy.

Thanks for the intel on Boris Arson, Ray!

Boris Arson first appeared in the strip in 1934 and was supposedly based on John Dillinger, so Doubleup has roots going way back!
Neil Wick over 9 years ago
Not to mention that Doubleup has had lawyers getting him off the hook since he was a kid. It’s kind of ingrained into him.
AnyFace over 9 years ago
He definitely has more history grafted onto him now.

Assuming that Joe is indeed inking his own pencils this week, I wonder if he’s using digital tools, as Shelley does.

Doubleup and Blaze’s growing friendship is unexpected, but oddly charming.

I wonder if Doubleup is paying for Davey’s Funeral with money he earned from Davey?

Presumably Uncle Boris saw potential in young Doubleup and taught him the ways of crime.

I paid for his funeralA rather odd bit of information to throw out there. Me thinks Blaze is trying to get on Doubleup’s good side.

Villains with personality, heart even. What won’t these writers think of next?

Doubleup is certainly a great villain but there’s nothing good about him. He’s a crook and a violent murderer. We should stop glorifying his sort!

Doubleup badly roughed up when he was just a kid
Bullies found a weakness, so did just what they did.
Doubleup soon was inspired by the Scarlet Sting
Liked the way he cracked the whip, the pain that he did bring.
Doubleup, he went to work, training with the lash
Skills he gained. Fierce grudge maintained. Ready now to smash
The roughnecks and rude roustabouts. The ones who laid him low
Revenge by whip at payback time. Regret soon they would know.
Ringleader quickly lost an eye, his buddies flayed ‘til screaming
Doubleup did beat the rap, his lawyer skilled at scheming.
Thus the tale is told to Blaze, who sees through a new lens
The violent man called Doubleup, who chuckles low and grins.
Pulling out a roll of bills to help defray the cost
For burial of Treerat: A Scarlet Sting fan lost.
The bullies helped to mold the man, yet he shoulders the blame
For murder and for mayhem, much to his well-earned shame.
