Well, if Tracy is showing Diet that projection, it should mean that Bribery’s escape was successful…Hooray! And now, we’re left with the mystery of where he got his air car. I LOVE THIS STORY!
I’d thought Diet Smith once told Tracy that “The Adverse Effects of Magnetism” press release was only a “Cover Story” for decommissioning the Moon Tech, partly so that villains such as Mr. Bribery would have less access to it.
[If I wasn’t working from my phone tonight, I’d look up and link to that particular strip.]
Mind you, he might be saying this for Bribery’s benefit, if “Mr. Bigg” is still within earshot.
Also, I think this might be the only weekday appearance of the Air Car, possibly so that those readers lacking access to the two Sunday strips will be privy to Bribery’s fate.
Vaccines were shown to cause Autism till it was proven that the testing was faulty and the Dr. lost his license over it.
Yet, there are lots of people who still believe that vaccines cause autism and they refuse them. This is the type of situation Diet is talking about — even when disproven, it doesn’t help much.
Tracy and Smith must still be in Ace Tower, because Smith is still wearing his bed clothes, from what we can see of his shirt collar. Smith missed seeing Bribery’s escape, so Tracy is showing a replay.
It was 3 in a row for Team Tracy at the Harvery Awards. I thought that we might also get 3 days in a row from our two resident poets here – Pequod and avenger09.
The long standing tradition, going back to the introduction of the original two-way wrist radio, is that the wrist device has been worn on the left wrist, just like Joe’s drawing that accompanies this strip in the nameplate each day. But, today, Tracy is wearing it on his right wrist! Not a big thing, really, but after watching Tracy with his left arm up in front of him all those years, I knew something was amiss in today’s strip!
I thought Tracy was getting a picture of Bribery, but maybe he is just projecting an image for Diet to observe, several minutes after the escape happened.
You’d think Bribery would be easy enough to track, though he did make a point of disabling the SBN News Drone, so he might have had contingency plans in place to likewise foil conventional tracking systems.
That said, a “Down the building, Through the subway tunnel system and Out” secret elevator route would have attracted less attention.
Fortunately for him … And this is true, believe it or not … Most city dwellers seldom bother to look up.
Now Dick Tracy has to win the Harvey Awards for at least 4 years in a row. Because this year is even better than last year. To not award this year’s greatness would be a travesty.Fourpeat?
Those white rays coming from Tracy’s wrist wizard shows that he’s got it in projection mode.I’m sure he wanted Diet Smith to see how Bribery got away, and hear what Diet has to say explaining how he got that air car.-It suggests to me that there’s a Blackhearts agent inside Diet Smith’s company. It would explain how the Munro brothers got in to kidnap Smith, as well as pinching an air car.Could there be… a Munro sister?(Mary Ann Munro? Lunar Munro? Mooney Munro?…)
re: the fate of VenusDid she actually die, or did she slip into unconsciousness? Looking at this strip, it can be interpreted either way, and I believe this was Mike and Joe’s intention. They put a lot of detail into the design of this character, and I think they wanted to see how the readers would react before a definite fate was decided. Many of the comments on this board are in favour of the “unconsciousness” side of the argument.I would not be totally surprised if we see Venus reappear in a future story arc.
Here’s a very famous instance of a fictional death being almost instantaneously retconned …
[ Spoiler Warnings, for those who didn’t see these films 30 years ago. There. Now you’ve been warned. ]
When the original animated “Transformers” movie was released to theaters, there was tremendous blowback from parents groups about the “Death” of Optimus Prime …
… So much so that the remarkably violent on-camera demise of Duke in the following year’s animated “G.I. Joe: The Movie” … Which ended up being released direct-to-video … Was overdubbed to say …
“He’s gone …”
“… into a coma.”
[ Seriously, that was a pretty gruesome death scene for the time, I’m amazed the footage made it to the final cut. ]
These writers love having cross over characters from the same time Tracy started So it wouldn’t surprise me if Tracy’s calling Clark Kent/Superman to capture Bribery!
Gweedo answered,…Like a dog, he chokes up on the strap and I have to watch my fingers. Still got ’em all !-———————————————————————-.I wondered where Devil got the bone… it was one of Abner’s apendages!.Re: “The Phantom”… Devil is the dog (wolf?) and Hero is the white horse.
That air car seems to be going awfully slow considering the speeds it’s been shown to do in the past. Kind of ironic to remember that it was Tracy in an air car chasing the auto that Bribery and Ugly Christine were driving that led Tracy to Bribery’s apartment HQ in 1966. I wonder if there’s another Blackhearts hideaway someplace? Bribery seemed to imply they were headed out in the helicopter. If I was Bribery I would look to get some altitude in the dark to make it harder to see him in case the police decide on an aerial pursuit.
Hey Gweedo, I used to read most of the adventure strips back in the 60’s too. Besides Tracy there were ones like Kerry Drake, Rip Kirby, Flash Gordon, Phantom, Buz Sawyer and Steve Canyon in the local papers. But there also was Mary Worth, Rex Morgan, Gil Thorp, Apt. 3G and Prince Valiant. Now, there is only one local paper (which just went up in price today to $1.50) and the only serious strips left are Prince Valiant (Sunday) and Gil Thorp, Mary Worth and Rex Morgan (Daily).
Gweedo was concerned and asked,Am I a comix junkie ? ? ?-————————————————————————.I have about ten regular strips these days. DT, The Phantom, Doonesbury, Dilbert, C&H, Fox Trot, Big Nate…
I used to read every strip in the paper, but I couldn’t really follow the continuity ones because I missed days now and then and had no idea what was going on. I finally started cutting out all the Dick Tracy strips so I could read them in sequence.
Officially I follow 4 strips on this site, but I read only Dick Tracy every day. I sometimes catch up with Gasoline Alley several days at a time. The others I follow are Wizard of Id and B.C. because I like puns, but I seldom have time to read them these days. :(

At last we know why the air cars were decommissioned! Irrational fear of cancer — and for the city, perhaps fear of being sued.

Or Mike might be lightly retconning that aspect of the story.

I’d assumed Tracy and Smith were still atop Ace Tower, though Tracy using his wrist wizard in that fashion does call their whereabouts into question.
Tracy might be employing it in record mode also, to gather additional evidence and Intel.

That’s a very nice technique on the third panel where the lines of Mr. B are all doubled, giving a “shaky projection” look to the image.
