Vitamin seems to have been on a first name basis with the Congresswoman, as if they have some sort of history. But now, he wants to avoid dealing with her. I wonder if there is a back-story here.
capt mutt: Thanks for the kind words the other day!.avenger09: Don’t know about anyone else, but to me, it’s rather nice to see the old SDM back!.Personally, I hope Mike and Joe stay away from politics with this strip..And I still resent that they appear to be going in the direction of making fun of fat people, whether it be politics or not!
It is kind of pathetic when it is plausible for some senator to stir up things over something that will take 14 generations to be a problem (a generation generally being 20 years so you are talking 280 years from now…longer then the country has even existed!)
Mike & Joe can do politics, hit on fat people, or whatever they want. It’s their strip. BUT, as was pointed out yesterday, Harvey might get more elusive. Let’s get back to Tracy-like stuff. Me, I’d rather listen to the gentle rumble of the traffic overhead and my pet munching on a few tin cans.
I’m never in favor of ridiculing anyone, but I do know that, at least three times, Chester Gould himself created overweight characters. Pearshape was, in fact, a caricature of Gould himself, who apparently struggled with his weight a little bit. Even more grossly overweight was Oodles, but he went on a drastic reducing program to avoid being recognized and captured. Then there were 3-D Magee and Pony, both pretty heavy. I did not view those stories as making fun of heavy folks – I just think Gould was drawing from the broad spectrum (no pun intended) of real life. Of course, we should never intentionally offend people, but on the other hand, if writers had to try to avoid ever writing anything that might possibly offend anyone, they would have to give up and not write anything. As with so many things, it comes down to what’s in the heart.
This is a strip that often names its villains after their physical attributes. Is anyone offended by Mumbles’ speech impediment or Flattop’s flat head and thick lips or Piggy Butcher’s grotesque body or Gravel Gertie’s bulging eyes? If we are afraid of cartoons making fun of people then we better all run for our safe spaces.
To paraphrase Chester Gould, bad people are ugly, in the vernacular sense of the word and his aim was to make them equally unattractive, as well. Hence the grotesque people we are so used to. By today’s standards and the PC crowd, folks that Gould created as ugly get sympathy. Gould wouldn’t get too far today with his original characters of yesteryear.

You have to admit….“Selfy” is a great name for a Tracy villain. Right up there with “Laughy” or “Pucker Puss” or “Pruneface” or even “Itchy”!!!

Team Tracy may not be racist but they are definitely politically correct. How many villians aren’t white?

I wonder how much tooth whitener Selfy goes through in a week? But I expect that, even at his most gleaming, “Coffee” Grounds will darken his visage….
