The boys simply don’t know how to wrap up a story. They probably hope the constant diversions will cause us to forget what’s going on. It’s a cheap way to leave all the loose ends dangling.
Guess that’s the shortened-to-fit healthier version version of “Momma’s little baby loves shortnin’, shortnin’, Momma’s little baby loves shortnin’ bread.”
And why in my head do I only hear it sung by Bugs Bunny?
gee, i’m not sure this is the scene we should be watching as gypsy and annie are being threatened by BB eyes and the police and body guards are in hot pursuit. Having arrived at the bad guy’s hide out we…go to a song about banana bread? This is like a radio station in 1979 cincinnati having the lead story of the day being hog reports while everyone else covers the fall of the shah of iran.
On 2/15-16/19 we had a two-day glimpse of “Typist” (Tar), the offended sports writer. I liked the teaser, as it suggested the violent nature of the next villain. The victim tied to the chair was not long for this world. Others felt the teaser was an unnecessary interruption. Reasonable readers can disagree. While I want to know what’s next for Annie, today’s teaser sent me to volume 19 of The Complete Dick Tracy. Looks like “Little Doc” is all grown up. The halo of flies bodes ill for his future. What may feel intrusive today, will be but a momentary diversion once the story is gathered into a collection. Which begs the question, where the heck is the next volume of Calling Dick Tracy!?
Actually, the “authors” here insult the readers. Maybe they painted themselves into a corner on the “Annie” arc, showing just how bad storytellers they are. Then, not only is there an unneeded interruption, it appears there is going to be another rehash of a long dead character or a relative. Strip is becoming devoid of any sense of creativity. These guys should be forced to read every volume of the IDW Tracy series and see how a story should be told. Waste of great art.
1- Yum! Delicious banana bread on ‘Cooking With Fruit Flies’… 2- And the proof is in the pudding as they say. Here come the fruit flies… 3- ACTOR: Wow! So you got every episode of ‘Cooking With Fruit Flies’ on VCR tape! PAT BOONE: Yeah, ummm… LINE! DIRECTOR: CUT! Dammit Pat! PAT BOONE: I forget. Are we selling cigars, outdated technology or that cooking program? DIRECTOR: Can somebody please get me William Devane on the line???
Oh, swell. Drop the climax of the B-B Eyes story for a cutaway to a totally unrelated scene of interest only to lovers of banana bread!
At this point in the B-B Eyes saga, I really do not care if the next story will or will not involve not-so-Little Doc, nephew of Flyface, or anyone else. Just finish this story and save the next story for after it is all over!
Intro (skip if you’ve already read any of the previous intros):
Hello, greetings, casual readers of past Tracy stories. I’m here because I’m on 2 missions. The first is something I’ve never done before, read each Tracy story by Mike Curtis (or his occasional guest writer) in one sitting each. I feel his stories are worth it. IMHO, Curtis is by far the best post-Gould writer this strip has ever had, and we’re all lucky to have him.
My second mission is to provide an immediately useful Featured Comment whenever needed. My 3 friends below will reply to me. You can read their replies if you like, but their only real purpose is to bump up this comment to the Featured Comment.
There are 2 basic types of immediately useful Featured Comments: the first type is to provide you with a Mumblespeak translator when needed. The other type (this type) is anytime that day’s strip quotes a real song. I will provide an html to a recording to that song so you’ll know the tune even if you’ve never heard it before.
End Intro
Doc here seems to be parodying the traditional song, “Shortenin’ Bread”. Here’s a 1938 recording of the song by the Andrews Sisters:

Good morning™, sneak previewers!
Flyface (1959) had a nephew named “Little Doc,” so I suppose that “Doc” is him.

AAAAAANNNNNNNDDDDDDD there goes ANY sort of momentum that the dreary annie story might have been building up.
Such is Mike’s M.O. tho… start building up to the climax of one story then SLAM ON THE BRAKES and stop it dead in its tracks.
I’m surprised that the readers havent revolted yet, regardless of whether or not “it’s better than what we used to have”
You can only hide behind that excuse for so long, Mike has been writing this strip for several years now, he should know better.

Maybe it’s my eyes, but is banana bread supposed to be that yellow?

“have you read all of those?” “no I keep them to balance wobbly tables” what a stupid question

As I recall Flyface did not smoke, the cigar smoking one was Willy the Fifth. Smokung may help stave off flues.

I was off by about a week of when the few days away from the story to set up a future arc would be.

WHY should we be watching this when Annie is in mortal peril?
