OMG, that is so gross! Yuck. But. (There is always a “but” and it usually is me.) Here in Houston we get a lot of our water from the Trinity River, which means we are drinking Dallas’ sewage. Then there are all the “natural” and “organic” fertilizers. Guess where they come from. And now we have poop pills to treat C. Diff. And finally all those fun things we did when we were young. Didn’t seem gross at the time. Don’t now as a matter of fact. And we don’t EVEN want to see a chicken processing plant in operation!
Our recycle program, like most, theoretically can’t take ANY soft tissue, or any type of food-soiled or otherwise contaminated paper, as it doesn’t take much of it to ruin a whole batch of usable paper slurry.
When there was a second person on the truck who actually picked up the cans and emptied them into the truck, they’d refuse to take one if they saw pizza boxes, paper cups, or used tissue or napkins. Now it’s one guy in a truck with a mechanical arm, which can only lift the rolling bins they issue….
So who knows WHAT people put in for recycling…so the garbage company has conveyor belts where workers with gloves and masks have to sort it.
Imagine the poor souls so desperate they do that job in Crustwood!
The recycling programme where I live is a total waste and an absolute sham. It costs the city more to try to find somebody to TAKE the stuff than it saves in any appreciable fashion — INCLUDING any ‘green’ benefits. They won’t take newspaper, they won’t take most glass, most plastic — there’s precious little they WILL accept, yet it costs so much for them just to put on a show of trying to be ‘green’. Makes me want to hurl. What’s the icing on the cake (the crap on the toilet tissue?) is that if you don’t recycle at least one item per week you get charged a penalty! I kid you not. So we have to scramble to find something — ANYthing — that they’ll take. The people who run this city are a bunch of knuckleheads. Don’t even get me started. But, back to the subject at hand, the Pennys would fit right in with the morons who came up with our recycling programme — I’ll bet Burl would end up being some sort of commander of the civil defence around here!
We just started using the large cans around here. Trash in one and recycle in the other. (recycle bins have onions growing in them now) Followed a truck the other day and both cans were dumped in the same truck. I am guessing they were late and the other truck had troubles. Anyway it takes 2 people for now one to drive and one to put the cans on the hook and press a button to have it dumped… I didn’t think Crustwood recycled anything. I bet the Pennys bin is full of the TV dinner and HoHO,Twinkies boxes.
So glad to be American. I visited Brazil in 2000 and was told after I got there in no uncertain terms DO NO NOT FLUSH ANYTHING EXCEPT HUMAN WASTE all paper and everything else goes in the little trash cans next to the toilets. Their plumbing could not handle that kind of volume. In reality it couldn’t really handle the waste. I’m not talking just one city. I visited 7 large cities on 2 weeks. On the up side even the out of the way places and public toilets had hand held bidets. To you and I they are kitchen sink sprayers.
And then there are the Scandinavian composting toilets—no water at all! My grandparents had something like that, only it was a lot cheaper and was called an “outhouse.” Used no water, just the Sears and Montgomery Ward catalogs.
When we lived in Las Vegas, recycling depended on whether or not a recycle truck came by. They only had a few. Otherwise it all went into the same truck. Why bother? At least (at the time) the food waste from the Casinos went to the pig farm.
West of Portland, OR, where I live, our recycle here isn’t too bad, local counties got behind it slowly but with local grass roots pushing, they eventually did. To make recycling work you personally have to get behind it and push local governments hard. There’s nothing bureaucrats hate more than being told they have to do their jobs.
While recycler still doesn’t take everything, they do take most plastics, metals, paper, and glass. Even hazardous waste and pharmaceuticals can be recycled now at a monthly drop off.
If your local area is going to bring your own bags, I discovered something useful, buy those big mesh laundry bags, (the kind your kids bring home stuffed from college) cut them in half and make two nice sized fresh produce bags. Easy to wash (and keep clean, something the Penny’s wouldn’t ever consider) and very light weight and small to carry.
