So Burl stops at the pump twice as often so he can complain twice as much.

In the 60’s when he was courting Joy, and driving a beat-up ’53 Chevy, gas was 27¢ a gallon.

He put only 50¢ worth into the tank at a time, explaining to her that it made his money last longer.

His financial acumen was one of the things that attracted her, and convinced her that he would be the great breadwinner that he became.

This practice was also said by some local busybodies to have had something to do with the premature arrival of little Patty, only five months after their wedding.

I can’t quite figure out the connection… perhaps others can.

Burl, you’re gonna bring the gasoline industry to its knees!!!

Around 1970 give or take a year or two, we had gas as low as the high teens. There were frequently gas wars that kept gas low.

There was just a debate among several former NBA players about this. One of them complained that his new Hummer takes $*0 to fill it. The other said “Just put $20 in when you’re at half a tank!” No one could convince him that it would be the same because you’d have to stop more often!

I really can’t believe that Joy will only eat half of a pie.

This cartoon is 10 years old. If he were filling up today, it might cost him at least $60 and maybe $70.
