After all this time, does Ma not know that it’s impossible to shame Burl into any sort of useful effort.

yeah, she’s deliberately talking just loud enough so she knows Burl is hearing all this…..trying to “guilt” him into doing some grunt work for her…….Burl will likely only respond with some sarcastic nugget…..like: I’ll give ya bus fare, just in case they DO charge to ride the “shuttle”……….

For some reason I thought Ma lived in a retirement home.

My mother used to ask me to hold the ladder while she went up to clean the down spouts. And, that’s how I would end up on the ladder cleaning the down spouts.
