Hardware stores are for women, too. I started going to one near my former house. Never once did they ask me why my husband wasn’t there (I had that problem in another hardware in the past) and they always were patient with me and answered my questions. I did a lot of home repairs myself, and even after I moved, I often still go back to the same place and on occasion I will tell them how many years I have been going there and how much I appreciated them treating me the same as anyone else. Not only was I young, I looked about 15, and sometimes was doing electrical work. I knew nothing of home maintenance and repair before I was divorced. No one would teach me since I was female, and my ex was just very good at it and didn’t want to take the time to teach me. One of my first solo projects was putting in a new sump pump in a basement in 6" of water. None of my pets or my child would be there with me except my one little black cat. She came down and stood in the water with me. First try the flow valve was upside down, and once I fixed that, the basement was cleared in no time. I was so proud of myself. It gave me confidence to try other projects.

I have a hardware store near me that you have to stand at the counter and tell them what you want and they will fetch it for you. I walked out!
