There actually is an entire school of thought in detective story writing that you can’t withhold information from the reader just to make the story harder to solve. If you want to do that, just get into accounting for Lehman Brothers, or any tobacco company.

Sherlock Holmes was like that. We did not get the clues that Sherlock got until the end when he explained how he got to his conclusion.
