Of course, the land on the Moon has gone unclaimed deliberately—the space race, as we should all know, took place around the height of the Cold War, and the powers that be feared that whoever got there first might use the Moon to weaponize it and give them a huge tactical advantage if it came to war. So instead, they agreed to keep the Moon (and related celestial bodies) neutral and unclaimed.
It’s remained something of a space-faring tradition ever since, but we’ll see if it keeps up forever.
