There’s a shortage of dogs to adopt here because of the pandemic and lockdowns. My fear is that once this is all over, there will be a huge number of dogs looking for homes as people find their jobs and dogs aren’t compatible and the dogs are handed back to shelters/rescue societies.
Blazer wasn’t exactly a rescue dog, but . . . I was driving home and I saw a puppy running across a yard. The driver in front of me neither slowed nor swerved, but hit the poor critter and sent him sprawling. I scooped up the puppy, and took him up to our vet for a look-see. No collar or chip, so Hubby and I took a photo and printed up flyers, but nobody ever claimed him. We had Blazer for 14 years. He was a sweet dog and loved his Mama.
I have gotten all my cats from animal shelters. Don’t be in a hurry. Don’t be swayed by pity. Pick a suitable animal that you like and who responds to you.
Before selecting my latest cat, I spent the morning looking at 30 different cats. “Raz” walked right over to me as soon as I entered the room and said, “I’m going to be your cat.” I was looking for a fancy cat and she was only a fascinating moggy. I looked at several more cats before I went back and told her, “You’re right, Raz, let’s go.”
I must admit, the process is a lot easier if you speak cat.
All my animals (dogs/cats) have been rescues. I’ve told this story before, but one of my dogs was a female Bichon Frise. She had been a backyard breeder dog and was a total mess when I took her. Only 3 years old but had never been out of a cage. Took me 3 more years to get her adjusted to normal dog life with her house mate a Lhasa apso mix. My point is that you can also rescue pure bred dogs if you’re so inclined. Many of them need good homes.
Wish I could foster, but we have our hands full with the dog we adopted in October. We have to take her to doggie day camp 3 days a week just so we can handle her energy levels the rest of the week! We were told she was 2 but our vet said she was 9 to 12 months. Five months later, she still acts like a puppy.
I could not imagine buying a dog from a pet shop. All of ours have been adopted. Now we have a cat. He wasn’t from a shelter. He was an abandoned kitten in our back yard. Now he’s 12, somewhat over fed and very much pampered.
We’re on our second rescue baby (see profile picture). She came from a hoarding situation. It’s been a busy year of housebreaking but worth it every time she snuggles up on my lap!

We adopted this guy a week and a half ago. Been trying our patience a bit since then, but man, has he helped my step count.

More people need to adopt a revolving door policy.

My furkids (cat or dog) have always been rescues. Once we even kept a donkey that was abandoned till we found a good home for her. She was so comical.

5 of our 7 were rescues (and the first two we bought from their mother’s people, not from a shop).
