My mom had a saying (and perhaps your mom say it also) and that is “they won’t harm you unless you harm them”. It’s not a stinging insect’s (or arachnid’s) nature to attack unless they’re provoked.
Pa Ayres wrote a little poem about wasps which included the lines:
For I’ve done a little surveyTo see if it will or won’tAnd they sting you if you hit themAnd they sting you if you don’t
Personally I’ve never had any trouble with them, though. The best way to keep wasps away from a picnic or other outdoor meal is to set up an open jam sandwich for them about 30ft away.

this is why I allow moles to live in part of my yard, to eat the yellow jacket grubs that also live in that part of the yard. Their stings HURT!

Yellow Jackets are the worst! They bite and sting and do both multiple times. Also they usually have help! Seems there’s always more than one of them!
