When it was believed that the leading cause of disease was poor air quality (malaria any one?) people actively spent time making bad smell maps of Europe. Ugh.
Wildest thing my Flat Coated Retriever sniffed was a skunk. We were walking her at night, came up to a tree and when we got to the other side, she was nose to nose with a skunk. They both just sniffed each other and we slowly backed away. No barking, no spraying. She is one gentle dog, about the only thing she will chase is squirrels.
My second beagle used to sniff toad butts. The toad would take a small jump forward, maybe in response to a cold, wet nose. Then my dog would move up and sniff the toad butt. My dog did this thousands of times and never once hurt a toad. She just liked to sniff their butts. She never explained it to me, but she was very gentle. My current beagle ignores toads.
I worked at a transit station this morning, and found an abandoned duffle-bag in my work area. I called it to the contractors’ attention, their people called security, and a very happy and lively dog brought her handler to check it out. Turned out one of the concrete finishers had decided to put his laundry in the concrete specimen box.

The censors might have had a problem if you would have included a.. small cat.

I wonder how many "barking spiders " that includes?

my dog loves to do Man-trailing. Following scent for a purpose seems almost magical
