I read a book once that supposedly reported the observations of a man who followed a pack of city dogs around town for a long time, day after day, recording their activities. When the weather began to get hot, they dug a tunnel straight into the face of a hill. It was long enough for all of them to walk into it, nose to tail. And on hot days, that’s what they did.

Actually, my malamute Juneau used to do that. She’d climb under the deck, dig a deep hole and lie in it.
