I have a 40 year old Christmas cactus that is going through hard times. I repotted it last fall because it was starting to look a bit weak. Unfortunately, the brand new pot and fresh soil only seemed to make things worse. Some of the fronds started turning brown and falling off. It didn’t bloom at all this Christmas. I don’t know if the soil or the pot was contaminated, or if it’s just suffering from old age. Much of what I’ve read indicates 30 years is considered old for a Christmas cactus, and mine was from a cutting that I found in a jar of water in my aunt’s house after she died, so who knows how old the parent plant from which she harvested it had been.

While I was repotting it, a few of the fronds broke off and I rooted them in water then planted them in a different pot but with the same soil and so far they are thriving. The main plant is doing better, so I hope it can be saved.

I have a 50 year old umbrella plant that is still growing strong!

I think some plants are problem plants. No matter what you do, they just don’t have what it takes. Sometimes if you just leave it alone to think about it, it might decide to be a good plant.

That plant needs some butterflies fluttering around to make it happy again.

Man, does this sound familiar! And I don’t even have a green thumb. The only thing plants do at my pace, is die :(
