Policeman: Sir! Step away from the laundry! Zonker's father: Why? I'm in my own yard. Policeman: Clotheslines are banned in this neighborhood, sir! Zonker's father: But I'm trying to save energy. Policeman: Sorry, sir, but outdoor drying is associated with poverty! It reduces property values! Zonker's father: Oh... Policeman: Okay, now, drop the line! Nice 'n' easy! Zonker's father: Do as he says son. Zonker: Yes, sir.
Sadly this is (almost*) all too real. Court rulings have given a lot of leeway to HOAs and their rules. Remember, read EVERYTHING before buying a house, esp. in an HOA.
*Police wouldn’t respond to an HOA violation since it is strictly a civil matter, unless they were enforcing a court ruling.
