If memory serves, wasn’t Clyde originally a black-power leftist agitator? When did he go right-wing? I missed (or totally forgot) that.

But then it HAS been a long time. Remember when Republicans were in favor of small government?

Well, I can help a little with Ginny and Clyde. When Joanie went to law school, she had a black roommate named Ginny, who was a year ahead of her in school, IIRC. Clyde was Ginny’s boyfriend who had plans to move in with Ginny until Joanie showed up. At that point, Clyde was just a mooching boyfriend. The last time I remember seeing Clyde in the strip, he had become a “cookie tycoon”. Think “Famous Amos”. I totally missed the part where Clyde became political. I thought that was more Ginny’s style.

A PS to pschearer - I think you’re thinking of Calvin, who appeared early on in the strip. I think he may have been a Black Panther.

ed coyote, thank you, The “Famous Amos” does ring a bell. He did, in real life, try a brief spin in the political world, if I remember correctly.

Clyde was more of a “wannabe” black radical. Liked the image, but wouldn’t do the work or risk the time. I missed his politicization, too, and I’ve been a DB daily reader since the middle 70’s. It must have all taken place during the 3 weeks I was out of the country.

While Joanie was lin law school, Ginny ran for Congress as sort of a senior project. She was running against Lacey (for the office or the party nomination, I can’t remember which). When it became clear that the sleazeball incumbent would otherwise win, Ginny bowed out, and threw her support to Lacey, putting her over the top. There’s a memorable series of strips of Calvin going door-to-door during the campaign, canvassing in the 9th ward! Also, he proves there’s a heart in there somewhere when he tells Ginny he’s proud of her for running. Ginny would occasionally reappear as Joanie worked in Washington for and with Lacey. I think Ginny was occasionally seen in Lacey’s reelection campaigns. I had forgotten about the cookie tycoon bit. When Lacey resigned due to her deteriorating health, Ginny got passed over - the party or the governor drafted Clyde to fill the seat!

I was too young to be a reader when Clyde first appeared, but I have a very old book called “Wouldn’t a Gremlin have Been More Sensable” that focused on the Clyde-Ginny-Joanie world. The title was based on a comment Ginny made after Clyde bought (on credit) a new, pimped out Buick Rivieara.

I think they should just “co-opt” old G.Trudeau. He knows as much as any liberal democrat, and they could use all the bucks he has to fund all these government programs they are going to invent. How about it? I am sure you would enjoy giving your whole bank account to the poor. ( Maybe they would leave the rest of us hardworking slobs alone then.)

teaguemj - we DO pay this much attention to real-life (???!) politics. Unfortunately, for the past several years, it’s only been here in gocomics that our comments get posted and read.

Over at Pibgorn, the consensus seems to be that the servers are running on different times, up to 6-7 minutes apart, and it just depends which server gets your comment to stamp its time on and post it. It really only matters when you get a lot of posts pretty quickly.

Here are some strips from 1997 dealing with Clyde’s cookie business and appointment to Congress:

Oh yeah, if you don’t think it’s old ask yourself, “when’s the last time I saw a Gremlin on the road?”

GEE1A - Co opt, the Republicans ignored the Dems when they were in control.

Yeah! And look what happened to the republicans.

    Ignore them at your peril…

There’s an FAQ on the Doonesbury web site ( http://www.doonesbury.com/strip/dailydose/index.html ) that sheds some light on the Clyde-becomes-a-Congressman backstory.
