Overkill: You're kidding me, right, Duke? An executive extraction in the middle of a revolution? Duke: He's a head of state, Overkill - it's a prestige mission! Overkill: It's also a suicide mission... I might be able to find a pilot, but we don't have anyone dumb or insane enough to drop into a burning palace! Man: Yes, we do. Overkill: He's still on the payroll? Duke: Did I mention the $50 million advance?

I don’t think we’ll see Jeff Redfern, though. Of course in comics anything is possible, but I’d be very surprised to learn that Jeff actually knows how to fly an aircraft in crisis situations. GT usually don’t give extraordinary abilities to his characters. Extraordinary stupidity by characters to get other characters out of jams, yes, but not abilities.
As for the $50,000,000: I wonder if Overkill will be willing to take a credit card number?
cdward almost 14 years ago
^They said they had a pilot but not a jumper - so the Red Rascal is their idiot - pilot just has to get him there.

Another untimely death of a Doonesbury character? Bye bye Jeff?

^After reading more closely, I withdraw my previous post. Yeah, we’re going to see Jeff in Overkill’s employ again.

10 to 1 Red Rascal gets the job done?
randgrithr almost 14 years ago
Frankly, it’s perfect. The Red Rascal gets to be a hero any way this goes. A dictator dies? A creep like Overkill gets separated from more of his still-dripping blood money? Really, does anyone here actually WANT Jeff to do it “right” at this point? :)
cdward almost 14 years ago
Jeff gets the dictator’s money out of the country, but the dictator bites the dust. That’s what I’m guessing. And the Red Rascal will live to screw up another day.

Meanwhile, back in the real world (which Doonesbury can be expected to revisit in a week or so), it’s heartening to see Obama cutting our ties with real tyrants. First he accused Scott Mubarak of busting the Wisconsin employees’ unions (except for the police union; the governor may need his thugs). And now, best of all, comes news of the president’s spat with those unspeakable Saudis:
“King Abdullah had at least two phone conversations with President Obama to convey his concerns in the weeks before Mr. Mubarak’s ouster, and the last conversation ended in sharp disagreement, according to officials familiar with the calls.
“The Saudis are closely watching American diplomatic gestures toward Bahrain. Any wavering of American support for Bahrain’s Sunni monarchy, analysts say, would provoke a deep sense of betrayal, and could create an unprecedented rift in a partnership with the United States that has been a pillar of Saudi policy since 1945.”
Maybe at last we’ll get the just revenge for 9/11 that Bush was too cowardly (and Cheney too dishonest) to exact nine-and-a-half years ago. It was the House of Saud, not Saddam Hussein, who betrayed us by financing Al Qaida.
Saudi Arabia is the archetypal tyrant—the Great Satan, to borrow Shiite nomenclature. By removing our support for this tyrannical regime, America can put itself once more on the right side of history. The question remains: do we care more for oil than we do about freedom?
diggitt almost 14 years ago
No, palin troll, the question really is – do we care more about Jeff or about your neverending drivel? My vote is with Jeff.

is the Owsley acid still that powerful?
Nemesys almost 14 years ago
palin, we put our own freedom first, as it should be. The freedom of others is nice, but only in that it may help preserve our own. Specific actions in accordance with these interests are of more value than sweet speeches.
Say what you want about Bush, but his adventures in Iraq were not that of a coward. If other countries in the Middle East look longingly at the democracy he created out in the desert and tyrants begin to fall like dominos, including in Saudi Arabia, will he be duly allowed his share of the credit, as he was duly apportioned his share of the blame?
txmystic almost 14 years ago
^^who in their right mind would look at the situation in Iraq longingly?? They cannot form a coalition for all the bickering between the factions that have been at war for centuries, suicide bombings abound, and the electricity and water service is spotty.
If you want to apportion any credit for the current fight for democratic reform in the mideast, give it to Mohamed Bouazizi, the Tunisian fruit stand operator who set himself on fire…
