Doonesbury by Garry Trudeau for August 01, 2011
Transcript:
Jeff: 'Morning, Mom. You look like heck. Joanie: Thanks. I didn't sleep a wink. Jeff: Why not? Joanie: I've been tormenting myself over a big life change... I'm trying to decide whether I should come out of retirement. Or at least offer to. Jeff: Boring. What do you mean, Mom? Joanie: No, no, you'll think it's boring.

I timed the new strip to the min. on GoComix. There is another website that hosts Doonesbury, though:

Real life is boring when you live in a fantasy world.

Hey, at least he’s making the effort! Credit where it’s due …

I know people who have the same attitude of “boring” when it comes to other people’s concerns. But, of course, when they have something of concern happening to them, they want everyone to be involved and concerned up to their elbows.
I try to keep a wide distance between myself and them.

Joanie looks like she’s gaining weight fast.

You mean events in Mom’s life might be more important than what my dog did?
Whitecamry over 13 years ago
That assumes Jeff having kids, which assumes Jeff having a girlfriend.

It took me 10 months, but this strip is the one where I’ve finally read every single Doonesbury strip.

What? No comment on what Joanie might be considering coming out of retirement for? Will she possibly run for President or go back into Congress?
francesclaire over 13 years ago
He seems like most “under 30” kids I know, self consumed and perhaps a bit overwhelmed with the possibility of dealing with others needs. But they do seem to outgrow it before 40.

I agree with Rayannina. Jeff can see that his mom needs someone to talk to, and he’s willing to lend an ear. There may be hope for the boy yet…

All of Trudeau’s strips lately—Sundays as well as weekdays—have centered on young adults who reject the reality of their parents’ world.
This irony and self-mockery are characteristic of GT, and no doubt he enjoys the puzzled responses of the older generation who make up most of his readers.
Or is GT trying to work out some geriatric crisis of his own?

@dtpi; what do you mean, you “timed the new strip to the minute”?
Hunter7 over 13 years ago
Jeff will listen with half an ear while the other ear & a half listen to whatever fantasy runs through his mind. And since he’s not working and not paying rent, Joanie has to go back to work. Costs money to get a psych evaluation for your son.

I assume Joanie is going back to lawyering.

Poor Joannie, her timing’s off. Wasn’t she Lacey’s aid in congress? With the tea party, it’ll be tough getting back into progressive politics. This isn’t like “back in the day” politics.
Don’t the Redferns live in DC? If they need the money so bad, why doesn’t Jeff just start growing Medi-Cann in the basement? That way when the family becomes financially secure, his parents will finally be proud of him.
DylanThomas3.14159 over 13 years ago
Fris again: Wouldn’t Joanie still have some powerful “connections” in DC politix who could ensure some kind of job? This kind of thing is common to both parties, the DEMob as well as the GOPpers.

Cann = canabis ref. is entirely too obscure to mean marijuana, if that was the intention.

According to Joanie’s bio, she was born in 1938, making her 72 or 73 now depending on her birthday — I’d say she’s aging appropriately! Jeff was born New Years Eve of 1982, making him 28 now, and meaning Joanie gave birth at 44. I give Jeff credit — he noticed his Mom has something bothering her, and he seems willing to lend an ear even if he expects to be bored. I wonder why Joanie’s considering coming out of retirement? Financial (Rick’s blog not paying well)? Boredom of her own? Feeling a genuine call to public service? Time will tell!

For no reason other than because “Palin Drome” posts here and commentators oft refer to Teaparty diva Sarah Palin, I give you the etymology of the word “palin”: It derives from the Greek πάλιν (pronounced PAH-lynn) and means “again”.

With any luck, Jeff will never have kids.

Prematurely age Joanie, dtπ? She had a couple kids when she ran off with Mike & Mark in the early ’70s.
