B.D.: Okay, there aren't any math courses starting at 10:00, but there is a history course, 202... Ray: 202! That's it! B.D.: "Hist 202-- Debacle: The U.S. in Iraq 2003-2011." You signed up for that? Revisionist history taught by some smug radical who opposed the war? Ray: Well, I know the material. I figure gut, no? B.D.: You're a vet, Ray-- a sitting duck!

Have to go with BD on this one…

BD hasn’t changed as much as I thought. He’s good to Ray, who’s actually smarter than BD. And he’s a good man — good to his fam, good to his war buds — but still not advanced much beyond his old Neanderthal attitudes regarding W.Bush’s insane wars. He can’t seem to put 3 + 4 to get 7. He’s still getting -1. Sad.

My son tried to go back to college between his second and third tours in Afghanistan. He ran into the same trouble BD is afraid of. Professors don’t want Soldiers in class, men and women with experiance, they want young students who sit in their seats, shut up and recite back exactly what the professor tells them. On top of difficulties with financial aid and public unwillngness to hire a Vet and a National Guardsman he wasn’t able to finish. Now he’s back in Afghanistan, with a $5k financial aid debt hanging on him.

As an actual history professor I LOVE having military vets in my class. They’re disciplined, do the work, and more mature than the average student. One of my best students this semester is a Marine back from Afghanistan.

I’m sorry, this is a dumb question, but does he say, “I figure gut, no?” Can someone translate that for me?

Meanwhile, let’s hope the safety net for the vets and others remains intact. Speaking of the safety net, I just heard another good one by Rocky Mountain Mike—Grandma got run over by John Boehnerlost her Medicare on Christmas Evethe speaker said she don’t deserve no healthcare, nor medicaid, Social Security. He’d been drinking too much egg nogand we begged him not to goand then he put on too much bronzerand he staggered out the tavern through the snow. When we found Grandma that morning,at the base of the fiscal cliff, she had some orange marks on her foreheadand some cheeto flavored teardrops on her lips.Grandma got run over by John Boehnerlost her safety net on Christmas EveHe went and kept his pledge to Grover Norquistand threw under the bus my poor Granny…

I hear that some senators are now blaming Susan Rice for something that happened back in 1998 when she was not really a big decision maker at the time, much more subordinate role. What will they say about her next? Susan Rice kidnapped the Lindbergh baby?

It’s Pete Seeger, not Pete Seger, as I put it. Sorry, Pete. Who’s still alive and will be 94 years old this coming May 3. Heard ‘im sing another gently anti-war song, apickin’ his banjo on the radio recently. A bit quavery, but still right on pitch at 93!

Thank you for sharing your story, pi, it’s very moving..I think the lesson we can take away from this and from Iraq is, if you’re thinking about starting or escalating a war, and the country is terribly divided over it, don’t do it!
montessoriteacher almost 12 years ago
Both my dad and oldest brother went to war. My dad was in the South Pacific in WWII. My bro went to Vietnam. Dad was just as liberal as me. My bro is certainly a liberal. There are liberal vets. My other bro did not go to Vietnam. He was a big protester at the time. Now he is a big fan of Rush Limbaugh. Go figure.

I hear that those weapons of mass destruction are in Texas now. Let’s invade there.

At least part of the picture has to involve what the individual wants to do. Lots of people might wish Clinton would stay as SOS, it is her decision to leave. We had to sacrifice our Democratic governor of Kansas, Kathleen Sibelius, to become Secretary of HEW. It is a really tough lift for KANSAS to ever get another Democratic governor. Sibelius did a good job in both places.
montessoriteacher almost 12 years ago
Even though it didn’t make a difference to the balance of the US Senate, we would have been better off with Sibelius as governor, rather than Sam Brownback, our current governor. Oh well.

I always thought Christian soldiers was a metaphor for those fighting to do good, so to speak. Others may view this in a different way, of course…

If it hadn’t been for G.I. Joes’ boots on the ground kicking Hitler’s butt from the Atlantic (D day) to Berlin, Himmler’s Holocaust would never have been stopped and the Third Reich could have ruled the world.
Of course, we could always have prayed to God to stop Hitler without our assistance. But sometimes God uses human beings.

“… in … “The Holy Bible” … “warmongering” enjoined upon CHRISTIANS. … IT IS NOT!”
KJV Holy Bible, letter from St. Paul to SLAVEHOLDER Philemon. Subject: Philemon’s escaped SLAVE Onesimus who had escaped from his master Philemon.
Writes Paul: “I have sent [him back to you] again: thou therefore receive him.” (KJV Philemon 1:11-12.)
While Paul does not in this epistle approve of slavery, he does in fact send the escaped slave back to his master!
“… in … “The Holy Bible” … “slavemongering” enjoined upon CHRISTIANS. … IT IS NOT!”
And yet it ALLOWS for slavehholding to exist. We don’t. Therefore, by parallel reasoning: The Bible allows for certain kinds of war: the just war. Example: WWII.
One must examine the issues and choose whether or not to support a particular war. I support the decision to go to war in WWII, a just war.
I did not support W.Bush’s war in Iraq, an unjust war. Same for the unjust war in Vietnam. Same for the unjust war in Korea.

What’s happening with gocomics. First a re-run of a re-run with the Elderberries and now with Doonsbury? or is this just deja vu?

Even the Bush administration later admitted that the claim of uranium yellow cake purchase by saddam Hussein was false. This has been noted by Time magazine and many others. If they really believed it at the time is one thing, but they later admitted it was false. If the British originally made such an assessment it has nothing to do with the fact that WMDs were never found. If anything, the British were more angry with Blair than the Americans were with Bush. The GOP wanted that war and sought the lies they needed to make it happen. Also, maybe we should start calling Republicans fascists, they certainly fit that description better than the Democrats as socialists.
DylanThomas3.14159 almost 12 years ago
The post-nine-eleven war in Iraq belongs forever to W.Bush. Tony Blair was just his lap dog.
montessoriteacher almost 12 years ago
GWB definitely did rush to war when it was not necessary. There is absolutely no question about that. The war in Iraq cost a fortune in lives and $. What a terrible waste for all concerned. Criminal really. No one blames the troops for that. It is not the job of the troops to make policy. It is the job of our leaders to make policy.
montessoriteacher almost 12 years ago
I would hope that we would never forget the terrible mistakes that were made in leading up to the Iraq War. That would be the biggest mistake of all. So no, we will not stop talking about it.

Neo, not a word of what you said was true; perhaps if you had watched or listened to something besides Fox “News”, you might realize that.

“The military mission in the Iraq war was done to perfection ….”
Ah, so the U.S. military machine DOES “do windows” after all! Is that your point? I’ll bet we can also swat fly eggs with sledge hammers.
alviebird almost 12 years ago
Well, there is all that about God ordering His people to “Kill ’em all” in at least one place. (Quoting a saying there, not God). But, of course, that isn’t the point. And it should not be taken as an invitation to glorify war. The whole Christian soldier thing is about standing tall through all the suffering (Hey, it’s a tough life in the trenches!), fighting, not just for the “cause”, but for the man next to you. (Which in a round about way is the cause. But now I’m over-thinking this.)

‘The First and Second Invasion of Iraq’I missed the first invasion of Iraq; George the 1st was unwilling to attempt that, being orders of magnitude smarter than his son(s).Unless you believe that Kuwait was really Iraq, the sentimentally named “Province 19”.
