Transcript:
Alex: Anything I need to know about the washer? Jeff: No, works fine. So what are you in town for? Alex: I've got a meeting tomorrow at DARPA. Jeff: What's DARPA? Sounds vaguely familiar. Alex: Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. Jeff: Oh, right. What did they invent? Something awesome... Alex; the internet. Jeff: No, that's not it. It was like some kick-ass Bond gadget.

Looks like Trudeau is a little miffed at Mr. Gore for taking $100,000,000 in oil money from Al Jazeera for his network.
Al Gore: “I took the initiative in creating the internet.”

The whole right is reactionary. Duh.
Beleck3 almost 12 years ago
whatever else can be said about the Right, they control the World through their stupidity , hatred and fear and unwillingness to accept others as humans.. a small group of people determined to fuck up everybody else. and very good at doing it. Credit the Right for what they do, even if it ain’t pretty.
Margaret Mead said a small group of people can change the world. The Right proves how their stupidity, hatred and fear can unleash such unmitigated evil. LIberals sold out to the Right to help them finish the rest of us off.

I love how we’re hiding the pregnancy like a bad Soap on TV!

Didn’t DARPA invent “Tang” too? Oh, wait, that was another deparment. Sorry!

I don’t think the pregnancy is being hidden. The characters don’t have to refer to her being pregnant in every strip, they have other things to do…

I go back far enough that my first use of internet-type connectivity was text only bulletin boards on Usenet.

No, you and Homer Simpson are wrong. Gore never said he invented the internet. But that’s ok. Don’t let the truth interfere with your ideology and your fantasies.

Also, super-talented people wouldn’t put up with being a govt employee – and earning a fraction of what they could in industry.>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>I don’t know what you’re smoking in your pipe dream but there are thousands of very bright and talented people who work for the Federal Government in one capacity or an other. Many brilliant scientists are the recipients of government funding for crucial projects in science, medicine, defense etc. This makes them government employees.Ideas and discovery are far more important than making lots of money . Sure, many could make more in industry but would not have the intellectual freedom they have now.Not all people, especially the super-talented, are as self-serving as you would have us believe.

Here is what Gore said: http://www.snopes.com/quotes/internet.aspIn short, he claims, rightly, that he supported the development of the Internet, which was indeed the collaborative effort of a lot of agencies and individuals.

I heard that DARPA is working on a spacehsip that will launch troops around the world in a few hours. It will be a single use ship though. Which means that when they land, they will be on their own until major forces arrive.

(From yesterday)@ T.E. LAWRENCE: “When is Jeffrey going to become an interesting character? He’s got the maturity of a five-year-old, the ambition of a skid-row bum, the sense of entitlement of a welfare queen, and personality of a three-toed sloth.”
You don’t find that interesting?Likeable", no. “Interesting”, yes.

MSM news has always been to the right followed by PBS and NPR as for balance news anywhere, its slim pickens or none at all.
jimsizemore1405 almost 12 years ago
-the sounds not heard isn’t the pleading for entitlement or welfare – it’s for a fair shake in our common pursuit of wellbeing.

Yep, it was the losers that did this kind of stuff. These were the schmucks out there wasting their time providing goods and services all the while inventing the integrated circuit, internet, GPS (the military Initially called it PLRS for position locating reporting system) and personal computers etc, etc, etc. The real winners were the arts/polysci/etc geniuses unable to calculate trajectories to Jupiter who decided to transform the country and spent their time infiltrating the institutions that influence public opinion meaning the academic, entertainment, and mainstream media sectors. They now own all that stuff and run the country, and by focusing on giving free stuff away paid for by the losers (ie; the 50% “rich” who are taxpayers) will continue to do so until the whole shebang collapses around our ankles. Trudeau and his Doonsebury team along with their fans represent the “winners” if that term means anything in a civilization slowly deteriorating while running on what’s left of the fumes the “losers” provided in the preceding generations.

“Uh… check out DARPA, OK. Most of it’s “work” is accomplished through contracting. The bulk of it is ground-breaking research, paid for with tax $, but performed by contractor/company scientists.”Most of the “ground breaking” research is done at universities like Stanford & MIT. These are the advanced researchers who are funded by DARPA, not corporate employees. The corporate world is good at finding novel, productive uses for publicly funded research, but not good at making breakthroughs. Most breakthroughs have no immediately obvious profit potential & get little support from the Private Sector.
kaffekup almost 12 years ago
While I prefer not to categorize people as ‘winners’ and ‘losers’, I do believe this generation (and the older people ‘leading’ it are riding on the efforts of the previous generation. They built a great country, and our thanks is to let the infrastructure crumble, all for the benefit of short-term profit for people who will never be able to acquire enough money to fill the emptiness inside.

Al and the internet is sort of murky but he did claim he and then ex were the inspiration for the " Love Story " . That is a disturbing image.

Late to this, but for the record, the Internet would be a set of pages listing file directories if it hadn’t been for a Brit, Tim Berners-Lee at CERN, who invented the World Wide Web and its protocols. True academic that he is, he didn’t patent it, instead he gave it free to the world.
