Jeremy: Mrs. D? Jeremy here. I hope you found the bird-call tribute of some comfort. I've also written a prose poem I'd like you to hear. I wanted to read it to everyone, but the minister kept looking at his watch. Ready? Okay, here goes. "A twig, bent low. Motionless, a chickadee stares down at the woeful countenance. This slumped figure. This man. This Richard. He gave a hoot." Lacey: Thank you, dear. That's very... uh... Jeremy: "The end. Copyright 1986. Jeremy Cavendish. All rights reserved."

I never fully appreciated GT’s genius at drawing before. The profile of Jeremy’s face just shouts banality, the quintessential nerd.

I think it’s a carry-over from Peanuts (the strip’s like a fusion of Peanuts and Feiffer for me), where complete circles around the eyes identify a child, like Lucy in the current set of older Peanuts reprints here. As the child gets older and loses some of the wide-eyed innocence, the circles recede to where they’re a pair of parentheses surrounding the pupils.
He has other conventions for different kinds of characters, but the innocent ingenue types favor parentheses. Wide-eyed innocence?

Nah, on further consideration (more than I should be doing—-do I have a life?), that expression is the very definition of a blank stare.

I’ll be so happy to see this arc recede into history.

Banality is a hell of a lot better than venality.
