Smoking is such a harmful habit. Lots of habits are harmful – overeating, undersleeping, too much TV – but smoking harms everyone around you, too.
I read that pets suffer from second hand smoke just as humans do. I know so many people who would never, ever harm their pets, yet they smoke! It’s sad to me.
I understand that most cities in China are so horribly polluted that people can barely breathe. I also understand that a huge proportion of the Chinese population is addicted to cigarets. I wonder if there’s some kind of linkage there.
Back when this ’toon first ran, the general population may have had a lot less info about the harm that tobacco causes both the user and those around the user. But the industry knew about it a lot earlier and kept info to itself; one of the reasons the industry finally lost big in lawsuits. I lost two World War II uncles to the impacts of smoking; one died due to lung cancer, the other, due to emphysema. Tobacco and nicotine are so addictive that my uncle with emphysema was still lighting up even while using an oxygen canister. Young guys being sent off to serve during World War II were given a lot of cigarettes to use in case they got caught behind enemy lines; they were able to trade the cigs for food and sometimes bribe a guard to look the other way and let them escape…
I am go glad that the airlines stopped all smoking on their flights. My first plane trip, I rode next to a fat guy who smoked a cigar. Later I got a seat in the row just in front of the smoking section.

Since G.D.P. includes all goods and services, cancer treatment boosts the economy.

Interesting to see the parallels between Big Tobacco then and the NRA now.
