White people playing black characters was considered okay (even hilarious) in the Golden Age of Radio, but as TV came in, this became much less acceptable.
Not Black, but Asian, Charlie Chan movies. The star, Sydney Toler was Swedish. Mr. Moto was Peter Lorre, German, I believe. Even Boris Karloff did an Asian detective. Then there were all the Native Americans who weren’t.
The movie, Harriet, about the life of Harriet Tubman is superb. Yet, it’s come out that when the script was first proposed, guess who the studio wanted to play her – Julie Roberts!!!
Who cares, indeed! Both Amos and Andy in the radio series of the same name set in Harlem were played by two White men, Freeman Gosden and Charles Correll.
Color is irrelevant in theater. Our local production of Christmas Carol has Scrooge portrayed by people of different ethnicities at the different stages of his life.
I think some people are missing the gag. Sid’s saying that Stern & Robin are on the radio, therefore the audience doesn’t see them and so the majority those would-be viewers of the biopic don’t even know that Ms. Quivers is black.

Isn’t “sycophantic sidekick” redundant?

Boopsie should be a natural at playing “quivers”. She’ll have to wear something low-cut, though.
