Let me start by sating I have NOT read “Dilbert” in over twenty years, shortly after Adams’ first book. Having said that, Dilbert’s pointy-haired boss or maybe Dogbert did a joke about how as people were quitting the company was becoming smart-sized as all the smart people were going or were already gone!
So basically within 2 weeks, all of your brain power, all of your innovation, all of your past, present and future knowledge will either be in the hands of competitors or be part of a startup that will eventually grow up to stomp you. Good move, Bernie.
Not unusual for employers to assume that there will be a big appropriate talent pool available when they decide to rehire… and that the people they laid off will be just waiting and willing to come back immediately… despite complaining for years how they cannot find enough qualified applicants…

Mike wipes brow and whispers, “I wish they were all that easy.”
Mike walks away from camera, iris to black.
