I’m no expert – and I read the media with a grain of salt – but it’s my impression that ’merikins as a culture are not particularly loved, admired, or respected around the world. And considering how we behave as a culture – no big surprise…
My dad was stationed in Australia for a time during the war. Naturally, the Aussies called everyone in his unit ‘yanks’, but they couldn’t understand why some of the ’mericans got upset about this.
A few of them used phrases like ’y’all’…maybe that had something to do with it…?
It cracks me up to hear “American” played by someone on the BBC. The only one who ever really got it right was Hugh Laurie. Many people who saw him on “House” had no idea he was from the UK. Of course, Laurie had been a brilliant imitator since the days of “A Bit of Fry and Laurie” with Stephen Fry. His musical impersonations of various singing styles, including American folk and blues, were always dead on accurate.
In the UK, naturally, the quickest laugh is to hear an American trying to be “British”.
“No other word for it…American”. That just made me ROFL – and I’m a U.S. Citizen (American!) Of course, regardless of citizenship, Zonker is in a category all his own…

The Brits’ scorn for us ’merkins is a façade an act. They love us to the moon and back. Everyone knows this. And who can blame them?

Yep, Zonker nailed the intro. And he hasn’t been beheaded yet—so it’s “so far, so good.”

Winston Churchill was only half American and he never lived it down, though he spent a lot of time at Downing St.
