Beginning of an interesting relationship.

I wonder how many people have the same connotation as I do for the word “davenport?” When I grew up in Minnesota, a davenport was a piece of comfy living room furniture. The word was used the same way in North Dakota and Iowa, and maybe some other places. When I arrived here in Utah, people didn’t know what I was talking about when I invited them to sit on my davenport. I learned that here, it is a couch.

Davenport was the name of a series of sofas made by the Massachusetts furniture manufacturer A. H. Davenport and Company, now defunct. Due to the popularity of the furniture at the time, the name davenport became a genericized trademark in parts of the United States.

Hmm—Lacey and Alice look enough alike to be identical twins.

I was six when I first heard the word “sofa “. We had a couch at home. I’ve never heard “Davenport “. I’ve only seen it in print.

I could be Teignmouth, Exmouth, Torquay etc. Depends on the accent/dialect.

Just because I don’t know where I am, it doesn’t mean I’m lost. I can get home from here, I’m just not familiar with “here”.

I always get those two ladies confused. But then, they’re usually pretty confused, aren’t they?

Not all who wander are lost.
