Why would the professor even read/grade the answer since it is a guaranteed A paper?

The JC I went to in the 70s had a stellar speech class. All that was required was: 1.) Show up on the 1st day of class & 2.) Show up on the last day & when asked what grade you wanted, say “A”…my buddy said “C”! The instructor asked why & was told “I can’t go home with anything higher because it won’t match my other grades.” I always wondered what his PE grade was?
