I used to be a regular shopper at the Shaw’s supermarket where I live. Then, they started using gimmicky sales tactics (“must buy 4 to get the savings”). I’m now a regular customer at Market Basket. At least their sale prices have no strings attached.
Having run an independent supermarket in a small desert community for over 40 years, I find this offensive. I suppose it was meant to be funny, but it reflects the cynicism toward business of the culture propagated principally by the mainstream media and entertainment industry. We absolutely do NOT cheat, and in our store, we try to avoid some of the multiple price games that the chains play. We do our best to be straight as an arrow so that our customers can trust us!
Years ago I went to a sports card shop near me. I purchased a couple of boxes of 3-ring binder pages that hold 9 cards each. That was on Thursday, while Friday the sale started 25% off the same thing. The owner was the sales person and I felt cheated because he didn’t tell me to wait till the next day. Never went back after asking him Friday. (he did say basically-read your emails)

So did you buy a fifth soda or just pay what he wanted for 4? You shouldn’t have bought any of it, it’s bad for you and the diet ones are the worst!

Credit where it’s due. He didn’t try to hide it. I respect honesty, even from crooks.

Q: How does a store stay in business for 25 years while cheating customers the whole time? A: It doesn’t stay in business.

I take it politicians become grocery store checkers when they leave office.

It’s a little further away than Shaw’s, but well worth the extra effort to get there.
