Drive throughs. All those cars idling. “But cars are so much cleaner now”, says my Libertarian son. Don’t know if he uses them when alone; he doesn’t use them when with me.
When I was working, I never had time between appointments to do anything but drive-through, eat quick in the parking lot and be on the road again. I frequented about 4 different fast food places around the area, and always ordered the same thing – one fish fillet w/ no sauce or cheese, and a bottled water.
One day I had my boss riding with me. I pulled up to an order booth, and while my boss was still dithering between a number 3, and a number 7 with a double order of fries, the guy taking orders says “Hi Jan, your fish sandwich will be ready in a minute, just drive past and wait.”
As we sorted out the additional order, my boss asked me, “how did he know that?” I shrugged – "It could be worse. I could have taken you to the 7-11 where hot dogs are two-for-one, like I did the last time Sam was with me. (Sam was a second level who was well-known for preferring a sit down meal at lunch.)
After awhile, they extended our ‘lunch hour’ from 30 minutes to 45.
