imdb has one movie with that title, and two TV episodes. The movie is from 1973, and is described thusly:
“The story of the friendship between a star pitcher, wise to the world, and a half-wit catcher, as they cope with the catcher’s terminal illness through a baseball season.”
Can’t say that’s something I’d find appealing to watch.
I’ve always loved the film. One of the best baseball movies EVER. But, I don’t seem to get the gag in the strip. It seems like it’s just stating the fact. What am I missing? Pleeeeease?
If there is a joke in the strip, I think it is just a gentle poke or something at generational gaps in knowledge, maybe especially regarding popular culture. The father rolling his eyes at something that is so obvious to him. Yet it totally passed his kids by. FWIW, I’m 55+, and had to look the movie up.
Actually, when I first read the strip, I was thinking that Bang the Drum Slowly was referring to another movie with a drum in its title (The Tin Drum). While I thought that, I thought the joke was that the father didn’t want to explain what the movie was about and so was trying to end the conversation.

I had to look it up. I would have never guessed it was a baseball movie from the title.

In my humble opinion, it’s one of the best baseball movies ever. And the book is even better.

They’d be better off watching Abbott And Costello performing “Who’s On First?”

the Cleveland Indians has a dedicated baseball fan, John Adams, who has been banging on a drum during their games since 1973!

The title sounds like a cowboy/ Indian movie.

Rather listen to the song ‘Bang the drum slowly’ written by Emilylou Harris and performed by Eric Bogle

Has this comic caught up with the times, when the only sports on are sports movies?

One of the best baseball movies about compassion and friendship ever. This was before De Niro went goofy.
