My dad always worked the crosswords in pen. Someone asked him why he didn’t use a pencil and he answered that it was much easier to see ink on newsprint than pencil. His brothers did them that way, too. I only found out many folks use pencil for the correctability factor after I was away from home.
I start a crossword by doing all the Across that I can. Then, I only do Downs that already have at least 1 letter in them. Then just go from there. I can usually finish the puzzle that way. Rarely have to “cheat” and do a Down that has 0 letters already done. My biggest problem with crossword puzzles is references to TV personalities or programs, as I don’t watch TV.

You shouldn’t do that Ralph. Leave the crossword puzzle on the table. Somebody might come along and try their hand at it.

Clearly he’s never tried the Sunday crossword. I never try that one without a dictionary, a thesaurus, and the Internet on hand.

The only ones I ever had a chance with were the one in “TV Guide” and the one in our newspaper’s weekly TV Section…

I like the most challenging puzzles. Most of them are too easy. I always use a pen to solve them.

I like to fill in the crossword puzzles in the flight magazine on planes with wrong answers using a ink pen.
