There was something in Mad Magazine about a guy whose wife had him pick up a penny. This led to him suffering a slipped disc. The doctor told him about traction, a back brace, and other treatments, and he said, “Don’t worry, Doc. We’re rich! We can afford it. My wife can give you a penny as a down payment!”

It may not make a whole lot of sense to pick up some things,

… but it at least it makes some cents to pick up money.

You can still pick things up- just squat down instead of bending over. However, I do prefer my grabber,

Don’t bend over. Genuflect instead, if no kid is available to get it for you.

I’m with Ken Otwell. I am 72, and my back is stiff / sore every morning when I wake up, worse when I have spent too much of the night sleeping in one position. I have a series of stretches that I do first thing. Then I am fine. On the somewhat rare occasion when I “tweak” a muscle in my back, 20 minutes with a heating pad 5 or 6 times a day does wonders.

Losing that gut would be the best thing he could do for his back.

I guess I can definitely relate to Ralph. Early this year I developed chronic back pain. After my Chiropractor couldn’t help much I tried Acupuncture for the first time and got some relief there. I even went for PT and that didn’t really help much. I’ve now had 2 different epidural steroid injections in my lower back but still have pain. Now I’ve ordered Orthotics and hope they’ll help me. All I can say is getting older really really sucks and why Ralph didn’t let Norm pick up the dollar that’s on him

At first glance the doctor kind of resembles Janus.

In real life that is the worst advice that a doctor can give you.

To keep one’s back limber, one must start the day with proper stretching exersices. The last ones being touching one’s toes with two hands and then trying to touch the opposite toe with opposite hand.

Husband has a problem as if he is off of straight up and down or lying down he gets sick. So when out or not in reach of a reacher I am in charge of picking things up.
