I love how everyone automatically goes to rhythmic gymnastics, when it wasn’t a sport on the bubble.
Wrestling lost to modern pentathlon, field hockey, canoe kayaking, and tae kwon do, and it’s being dumped to make room for golf and rugby. You could at least TRY to make an argument comparing it to one of those sports.
And what does it say about the sport when ESPN chose not Rulan Gardner, not Cael Sanderson, not Dan Gable, but Kurt Angle for its phone interview on last night’s SportsCenter? How many people know Angle for his Olympic medal, and how many know him for his WWE antics?
Golf is a sport? Please. Golf is a game. When will we have Olympic Chess?
Personally, and I know this goes against stereotype, but I can’t understand why anyone plays golf. Life throws you so much aggravation for free; why would anyone pay to get more?
Greko – Roman wrestling should definitely stay in the Olympics as yes, it was one of the original competitions in the ORIGINAL Olympics. Now trap and skeet shooting, golf, cycling and other “sports” that use mechanical equipment of any kind, might be the first place to look for cancelation. Even the ancient Greeks DID have small, human powered, boats, so canoe makes more sense than some might think.
Let s/he who actually watched Olympic wrestling during any of the last three Games, or looked for it online, cast the first stone..I’m hearing all these wonderful words like “tradition” and “legacy”. I’m not hearing one bit about how exciting Jordan Burroughs’ semifinal match was..And I’m willing to bet that no one here can tell me, without looking it up, what weight class Jordan Burroughs was in, whether s/he is a man or a woman, if s/he medaled, and, if s/he did, when and what kind.

So why are they discontinuing one of the most basic Olympic sports now? Because the Iranians are good at it?

Television ratings are one of the reasons given for dropping wrestling. A shame what we have come to.A good cartoon.
