    Why not?

Isn’t every pro league now based on the star system? And why would a star care where they play, except who will pay them more?

Pfft. You should see what goes on in the CFL. Marcus Allen’s brother played for all the teams and one or two twice.

I think it hurts fan loyalty – last season’s hero becomes next season’s adversary… don’t know who’s on your team without a new scorecard (and you may even need new scorecards during the season)…

The NFL teams are a business as much as they are a sports team. They need to have 48 players (or employees) at minimum, and you need to keep their wages below a certain amount. And the amount you play each player in each year rises.

Because of this, and because they need to keep talented players, there is a need to cut costly, underperforming, or old players from your roster and bring in new ones that cost less. And sometimes, the talented ones may cost too much to keep, and you need to either renegotiate their wages or let them go.
