The lazy way to dig for worms is one of the best: stick a spading fork in the ground and wiggle it back and forth. Apparently worms don’t like the vibration. They will start popping up out of the ground.
As a zoo docent, I regularly – and happily – handle snakes, tarantulas, scorpions, roaches, and other wee beasties, but the thought of a big ol’ thrashing night crawler in my hand sends a chill through me, and my BP goes up 15 points.

I was in my late 20s before I learned to “dig” worms that way. I had my own secret parking lots for the good ones.

Yeah, and I hate to have to scoop up the suicidal earth worms on my driveway and toss them back on my lawn.
