Ironically, I am thinking that cavemen more likely had wine than beer. Not that I have any more information that Eno. I am just thinking that gathering grapes and letting them go bad, but still eating/drinking them was more likely that the blending necessary to get beer.
“But whether or not Paleolithic man drank alcohol is actually a scientifically debated topic, with many believing that our early ancestors actually did enjoy alcohol as the occasional drink. As Patrick McGovern observes in Scientific American, “our ancestral early hominins were probably already making wines, beers, meads and mixed fermented beverages from wild fruits, chewed roots and grains, honey, and all manner of herbs and spices culled from their environments.”’
Elephants have multiple stomachs & sometime store fruit in one until it ferments. Mammoths may have done the same with wild grains. Humans probably got the idea from them after a hunt.
