To me, the whole point of this strip is the nostalgia. So, who were the objects of fourteen-year-old girls’ affections in 1970??? I was in college then, diggin’ The Lovin’ Spoonful, Jefferson Airplane, Laura Nyro…but I have no idea what the youngsters were listening to then.
Marty Son-in-law here. Sorry guys! Won’t happen again! The original celebrity has passed away and we thought out of respect for him we’d put someone else in there. WRONG CHOICE! You’re right. David Cassidy, JIm Morrison, Davy Jones or Bobby Sherman would’ve been good choices.
Annie asked who the original celebrity was. Let’s see if you can guess with a clue. He liked racing and eggs!! I’ll be back to you later today.
Marty son-in-law. Great choices guys. I’ll post the celebrity name later and send you an Emmy Lou t-shirt! Thanx for all the great comments. We listen…and learn!!
Mick Jagger? He would have been too old. (almost 30. ) The Stones formed in 1962.(In the mid 60s, I was a Stones fan when most of my friends were Beatlemaniacs.)In the early 70’s teenyboppers were more likely interested in the Monkees, the Jackson 5, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young.
And here I complained to gocomics about that! Hey Marty’s son-in-law, sorry! It really irritates me to read such a great a strip and then see it changed to something totally not relevant!! I always liked Emmy Lou and this is the first time I’ve managed to find a place where it runs consistently! Some day I’ll find a book of them. Is there a collection anywhere?
Marty Son-in-law! Hi Happyfrog! No apology needed when an apology isn’t do. My error and I own up to it. I think its wonderful that everyone feels so strongly about Marty’s work that they’d post a comment or even complain to GoComics. We DEFINITELY heard you all!!
OK the answer is…Paul Newman! He was one of Marty’s favorite actors. She mentioned him a few times over the years. And Johnny Diego, I was thinking it was 36 eggs in Cool Hand Luke, but you’re right, it was 50 eggs.
Speaking of celebrities. On Monday I’ll post a story of 1 celebrity that called Marty after she mentioned them in Emmy Lou. Thanx for the great names mentioned today by all.
When my daughter was about this age in the 80s, she noticed the Newsweek magazine cover for The Color of Money and said, “Hey, that old guy next to Tom Cruise is kinda cute.” More proof Mr. Newman is one for the ages!

I’m actually dismayed by the substitution. I would really like to know who Emmy Lou’s original heartthrob was!

Okay, that’s been edited. Far more likely to have been a Cassidy brother.

Don’t know about Emmy Lou, but Davy Jones and Bobby Sherman were the stuff of which MY pre-adolescent dreams were made

I think Emmy Lou really has a bit of a dark side which means she was probably fantasizing about Jim Morrison.

I was thinking Davy Jones or Mick Jagger.
