The view looks so bleak to me. It reminds me that this is post-apocalyptic. I would hate to be walled in like that. But I’d probably just spend lots of time sitting next to a canal, dangling my toes in the water.. looking down..

The walls and ceiling are interesting. I wonder if the wavey lines on the walls constantly move. And do the circles on the ceiling also move, a symbolic type of cloud or sun?
A form of air conditioning. Heat rises. Warm air rises then cools and comes down. It you look at really old homes built back in the days they had very high ceilings. This allowed the heat to rise which would cool and come down either naturally or by fan motion. Natural air conditioning. The long hall ways going from front to back were for the same purpose. Catch the summer breeze and run it through the building. In Endtown that along with the water flowing thru the channels would keep heat levels lower. The flowing water would generate a slight breeze by frictional motion of the water in contact with the air mass. Habitation generates a lot of heat so these would be very eco friendly ways to remove some of it.
Don’t get me wrong. I wouldn’t want to replace the discussion here for anything. I love the daily banter with everyone I’ve met here. But the Underground has a lot of things, like Aaron’s FAQs that make things so much clearer – especially for the newer folks. It would just be nice to be able to say, “just click over there and you’ll have Aaron’s take on things” or someone else’s special outlook. A lot of the stuff on the Underground would just take up too much room here and not necessarily be on subject for the day. Not to mention the ease of use going back and forth between there and here.
On the banding on the walls it is sub earth strata. The interesting part is it mostly light in color. This indicates to me (an degree in Geology) that Endtown is probably built inside of large granite type material. Granite can band like that and would be excellent material due to its hardness. Harden quartz, feldspars, corundum (sapphire to common term) All rated at 8 to 9 hardness compose granite. Excavation of Endtown would have taken some work cutting that out. It would explain the straight lines as easier to cut rather than curves and such.Camp David in western Maryland is built similar to that. Hollowed out granite mountain the place the buildings inside. Not on the scale of Endtown but shows it can be done.Did you know granite is a natural source of radiation also? Levels vary according to the type of granite. This would have probably been taken in account when deciding where to build Endtown. Granite intrusions can vary in thickness from 2 kilometers to well over 60 in places so you could excavate an interior cave.
It looks so small from there, but it is just that the ceiling is so high. I don’t really know what Holly is saying to Linda. that she CAN be one of them, or that she doesn’t fit in yet. Her nose looks too big for her face. It dominates her face. I hope she is not terrified.
Point of order: the lights might not be neon tubes but I’m sure they’re not skylights. Back at the end of the first Wally-and-Holly sequence, they came on as abruptly as if someone threw a switch…
I remember a stunt, years ago, where someone inflated a large thin transparent plastic tube with neon (or maybe one of the other inert gases), and ran a current through it. It only seemed bright at either end of it, but all I ever saw were black-and-white stills. So it’s possible to build giant neon tubes, but I don’t know if it’s practical.
(I’m also taking the lighting as one of those things that came pre-installed with the city, thanks to the efforts of Lady Flask…)

Perhaps it is a contingency plan?If they really needed more space, they could find some way to build upward.”Endtown is not built on the concept of an “expanding economy”. There’s no commerce with other colonies, no inflow of currency or products, and limited renewable resources. There’s no reason to build up because the population is stagnant, or slowly decreasing due to encounters with Topsiders. This isn’t a thriving city, it’s a decaying bomb shelter. The only thing missing is the Old West sign saying "Welcome to Endtown, Population: " with a piece of chalk and an eraser.
