Chic has had to develop a thick skin to live with a) a dad who doesn’t want him, b) the knowledge he’s an accident, c) a society that would have preferred that he was eaten, instead of born, and d) a boss who feels safe enough to beat him with impunity. I’m sure he’s cried all the tears he had many years ago.
He said his Dad wanted to sneak him out and into some other dump. This sounds like there could be other communities like Endtown nearby and a possible goal for Wally and Holly to aim for.
Ahhhhh…..Holly misses Clive. What does Holly cry about…..what do most girls cry about?? Sadness just sometimes overwhelms a person….even big strong tough guys can cry.Chic is suspicious of “sympathy” or any one feeling sorry for him. He has his tough shell on but it is paper thin as are many shells we cover ourselves with. When he refers to his brothers and sisters this to me changes the fact that the Lizards may keep track of the eggs as to mates and results. Originally they may have returned the egg to the parents once “candling” proved a lizard. Chic was probably the first born to them and removed when the others came about with him hidden from them. Chic was one out of five hatchlings of this leader and Helena. A candling mistake birthed him so this fact had to be hidden from the colony. That may explain why all eggs now are keep in a birthing area to prevent a mistake like this from happening again. Now this fact makes something else come up. What if they make the mistake again and a non lizard is hatched…..do they kill it?? The mistake could happen again. This does point out another problem probably brewing that breeding in this settlement is probably restricted. Only those who produce the most lizard eggs are probably allowed to breed. Those who are less successful may not be breeders so sex may be strictly controlled. The females talking about who they can do it with and when I believe was all a front for Sarah. She saw through it. Records are probably kept so only those who are most successful at producing Lizards are allowed to breed. Fail too many times and out to pasture you go. Your gene pool will not carry on much less getting the pressures relieved. May be the reason why Phil is the way he is….unsatisified….no release of urge to breed…this could explain his anger….Piotr may be untried but deals with fact that if he fails to produce lizards then off he goes.I wonder what Jim is up to about now…….
Holly lost a child, and it has affected her in more emotional ways than we’ve seen. She was going to jump off a building, for one thing. Here…she’s seeing a child (or children) being thrown away.
Veteran,The problem with your theory that individuals are banned from breeding if too many eggs produce nonreptilians is that it has been publicly acknowledged that only one in 200 fertilized eggs produces a reptilian. Thus, the vast majority of fertilized eggs from any couple are likely to be the wrong breed. I would imagine that if the wrong kind of egg makes it through candling, its considered a mistake on the candler’s part, killed and sent to Phil for cooking. No harm, now fowl.It is possible that Phil desperately needs a little horizontal action, but I don’t know if he is actually restricted from mating or if he just can’t find a woman who would want to be with him. He doesn’t really come off as having a winning personality and I suspect that his job, which involves preparing the rejected fertilized eggs, doesn’t exactly endear him to women.
Without being an apologist for Phil, I think that within certain parameters he wants to keep his son alive and ‘safe.’ Thus he helps keep him alive within the colony but also tries to get him out. Certainly I think Phil finds Chic’s existence to be a problem for him as leader, don’t get me wrong. I don’t want to assign excessive altruism here. But I also think that in many ways, Chic has developed the same kind of personality as Phil, the survivor, and if the roles were reversed they would probably behave much the same way.
Hearing about Chic’s story makes me feel so bad for him.Seeing Holly’s reaction to it and making her have flaskback and all the rough time She went through and that is why we love to hear stories. it helps us to deal with the tough stuff we have had happened to us.
By the by…the efforts of Lizardtown seem focused on producing just one type of lizard and no other…I suppose any number of other types or breeds are excluded in the culling process.

She’s not crying for you, Chic, she’s got her own things to cry about.

It’s called empathy, Chico. Something that seems to be in short supply.

I’m thinking Chic is definitely his father’s son.

Perhaps Holly is realizing that Endtown wasn’t so bad by comparison.

Holly was distraught about losing a baby. We haven’t heard this back story yet. Lots of babies are being lost in Lizardville.
