One does wonder (this one does, at least) whether or not those air scouts are something to worry about. Probably, otherwise there would be no reason to show them. Now one also wonders whether the dittos actually have their own collective intelligence or they’re only “borrowing” their personality from Wally, and only because he’s the most strong-willed person present?
from Wally’s eys in the 1st panel he show that he immediately knew what to do, but a bit surprised that he didn’t already have the dittos in position before.
Perhaps the scouts detect Clive’s brain and is following that. A missing PT would be cause for more searches. Especially if the topsiders found the wrecked PT and this led them to the colony. The smoke from the fire was just confirmation that there was a target there worth destroying. 2 Colonies destroyed, how many are left besides Endtown?I fear we may have our answer in that Wally, is now looking for a possible end to the waste instead of another colony. The dittoes won’t let him down because Wally won’t let anyone else down. As stand up as he may seem, Wally, could have doubts in his subconscious and this may interfere with dittoe operation.
In the last one they left foot prints. If the dittos are, indeed, keeping them hidden from Topsiders, then perhaps those air scouts are following the odd appearance of disembodied foot prints?
Wally’s comment in the last panel makes me wonder about the ditto “hive mind”. If the ditto hive works as a team, then the desire to serve the hive would mark you as a deserving member to be protected BY the hive. It’s possible that the reason the dittos had been so truculent with Wally before is that they viewed him as a threat to their safety because he WOULD “let everyone down” at that time. Going into that boxing ring in Unity may have been the best thing that could have happened to all of them.
ReedkomicksMy understanding is that 13172 is Clive’s serial number. Its generally a way PTs are identified, and how they talk to each other.http://www.gocomics.com/endtown/2011/11/15Having looked back at the older strips, I noticed that Clive has one of the lowest serial numbers I’ve seen. Petey (who was a PT back in the Al and Gustine strips) is 31715 and the other PT he is talking to is 31265. If we assume that the ID numbers are sequential, than Clive significantly older than either of those two. That may help explain why he is aware of his having a “brain” and the fact that his drivers have given him a name. He’s been around for some time.
The other thing I just noticed is that, assuming sequential numbering and that no numbers were skipped, the TS have harvested and plasticized at least 31715 heads for use in their equipment. That suggests that the TS have some serious mass production techniques in order to process and use over 30,000 brains. It also makes me wonder how many TS there are. I would assume that there is at least one TS per brain though it is likely that there are at a minimum 100,000 TS out there and the number may be in the millions. That may explain how they were able to get all those drones flying.
Assuming they’re sequential, but the numbers may conceal other information. Five-digit zip codes have three front digits that indicate one area, then two more than indicate an area within that first area.
Kirbee is looking up. Maybe the last panel is her viewpoint and she sees the flyers. She may not know they’re anything to worry about, though… Everything is new and wonderful to her outside Unity, despite her snipe hunts, and for all she knows, the flyers are a new wonder, like the dittos. Wally will ask her why she didn’t say anything about them, and she’ll say, “Are they bad?”
I wonder if Clive has a tracking device inside that base, with a battery which can last 30 days like an aircraft “black box?” (Although aircraft so-called black boxes are usually orange to make them easy to spot following an accident)

Hmm, more scouts in the air overhead, hope those dittos are working the way Wally is thinking.

But what does the top of the umbrella look like to the scouts? Is it camouflage or an umbrella top?

A dome a hundred yards overhead is great!
What about thirty feet, though?

Maybe they’re invisible, maybe not.
Either way, they’re leaving three sets of tracks to follow.
