Well… I can see the need of keeping all the colony’s residents occupied at productive tasks to support the colony, but either there’s not really enough work for everyone to do or the colony’s leadership is erratic. Pulling a crew off a job that only needs one more month to finish and giving them a make-work task seems odd. No wonder Wally is restless.
I would call this busy work……where at Endtown you were on the dole ( did not have to work unless you wanted to) here at Eden you may have to work……even if it is to dig a hole then use the dirt to fill the previous hole you just dug for several months. Wally will be on the move…….
Seems like this is a governmental “make work” program. Makes sense, in a way. Idle people on welfare tend to become dissatisfied and are prone to crime and riots if only to pass the time. However, it could be like some of the WPA programs of the Great Depression. It provided a way of putting people to work during a time that there were few available jobs. The question is that how long will Wally be able to handle this type of existence? We all ready know that he is slightly claustrophobic. That is why he was living on his own in the wastes in the beginning.
The Topsiders also have government work projects, but they have a lot more teeth in them than a Rec Center. Endtown did try a pre-emptive strike against a Topsider Satellite about seven years ago, our time. It failed and now the the topsiders are getting quality surveillance (8/17/11) of their next conquests. Hope Eden has a Ditto cover.
So nobody bothered to make or salvage any digging machines? How were they expecting to do that much digging with such a small crew, or is this another metaphor.
They do not know he has dittos, but they suspect. If Wally uses dittos to do the job, then they will know for sure. The only thing more dangerous than a topsider is a mutant who can use dittos to take over the colony and make himself dictator.

Okay. So, we have here a total absence of job satisfaction, in a character who’s got feet restless for moving on.

I hate those make work jobs.

A 5-month long game underground? Is this what they call a cave-in?

Aaron, you are not foreshadowing a 5 month hiatus by you, are you?

And you thought the Ents (from Lord of the Rings) were slow?

Sounds like a normal government works project.

Just one question: where do they put the rock they remove to make the rec center?
Night-Gaunt49[Bozo is Boffo] about 6 years ago
You would think that real work is indeed necessary. And to carve it out of solid rock by hand?
salenstormwing about 6 years ago
Okay, so no ant colony builders. Just union workers (who’s union was destroyed in the apocalypse).

So they start digging, and soon break through somewhere in Endtown…

So Eden is the perfect colony, except engineers have to do manual labor.
