It is to protect (at least to a degree) the ball from getting a concussion from blunt trauma (like from dribbling). It is akin to the helmet worn in football.

Our school only allows nerf tag and then only after you passed your appropriate tagging exams.

No more double dribble … Lucky to get even single dribble out of that ball.

We all know that this had to happen, right? Next. footballs will need helmets to protect them during kick-off, point after touchdowns kicks, and punts.

…and always remember we’re just playing for fun. No one will keep score and you’re all winners!

Those aren’t the balls that need protecting.

And we’ve stopped keeping score because we feel it is unfair to potentially emotional hurt a child who has never been taught the benefits of winning and losing and could potentially never recover due to lack of parental involvement in their lives.
