Like the crazy looking fortune teller next door. The one between me and the weather forecaster.

Used to go to a big name financial / investment firm for over ten years, and followed their advice the whole time… had a portfolio review with them, where they told me that I was not going to be able to retire by the time I was 65 (despite assuring me the opposite until that day)… said I needed a new strategy (that included a number of new investments I needed to buy from them)… they were totally surprised when I reminded them that I had been following their strategy all this time, and that now they were admitting that they’d failed me, so I was leaving them.

After researching other financial / investment firms, and talking to some folks who were doing well, I switched to another firm. Didn’t really change my strategy much – but found that the old firm had been killing me in fees (many of which were only revealed by insistent questioning). Was actually able to retire at 58.

This is so true. If you are still paying someone to manage your finances, get out of there right now. Many outfits like Charles Schwab don’t charge any fees at all. And, they will do every bit as well as any financial planner who is charging you.
