The best story I heard was from a Mercedes-Benz dealer who wanted a graphic designer to create a brochure for a very low fee, but offered to let him put his logo and contact info on the back as it would get him lots of business. So without missing a beat, the designer said “sure, and you can let me drive around one of your Mercedes-Benz around town with a sign in the back window advertising where to buy one.”

in 1971 my father started paying me $3 to mow the lawn. You had to put your foot on the mower when you pulled the cord to start it.
