People who write checks (back then and now) always act surprised they have to pay for their groceries when they get to the checkout. Not only do they not have their checkbook out/nearby and waiting, they don’t partially fill it out while waiting in line to make the process go faster once they get there. I see the same thing with cards, though the wait is not quite as long.

I’d hate to have been in line behind her.

When I wrote checks for groceries, I always had everything filled out, except the amount, before I even left the house.
