For those of you that don’t know Lynn’s book Farley and the Lost Bone explores what happened to Farley when he left the Patterson’s yard until Uncle Phil found him.

Nothing like jerking yourself around, Farley.

Oh now! That is so inhumane! I hate to see dogs chained up. Fence your yard if you are going to have a dog. Nobody likes to be chained or tied. You wouldn’t like it and your dog doesn’t like it.

It would help Farley if there were bungee cords in the chain.

I think it’s safer for Farley. While he was missing he could have been hit by a car and left for dead. But he needs to get his exercise so I hope someone walks him and takes him to the park.

They probably were not able to arrange to have the yard fenced in in a day or two. (I wish the Elly haters would read another strip instead of patrolling this one for signs of how evil she is. It’s IMAGINARY, people. Roadrunners never go off the cliff either.)

Inhumane? The dog running loose into the road and getting hit by a car (whose driver had no time to react), that is inhumane. The dog who runs out at the last minute to take a bite out of a child, is inhumane. The dog who roams the neighborhood killing other peoples pets it finds, is inhumane.

As an 8 yr old paperboy, I had a customer who had a black lab bitch, that when she was outside, was chained to a stake in the middle of the yard. The chain was just long enough to get within her length of the sidewalk that lead to the front door, where I had to leave the paper. She didn’t like something about me, maybe my bicycle, and for 6 years she would run at me, growling and barking, as fast as she could, until she reached the end of the chain and would land on her back with her back legs on the sidewalk. I never much liked making that delivery, always wondering if this time the stake wouldn’t hold (did) or the chain would break (didn’t). She never learned. This wasn’t in response to the discussion about chaining/restraining dogs. The 2nd panel just reminded me of it.

We also have to chain our puppy inside our fenced yard. The cable she is on is long enough that she can reach all parts of the yard, but if we don’t have her on a cable she will dig under the fence and get out to chase after the rabbits. Hopefully with some more training we can teach her not to do that, and then get rid of the cable…

@summerdog You are right. A dog running the neighborhood is a terrible thing and causes all sorts of problems for the people who live there and their pets and their children. The free running dogs are in constant danger from traffic and from poisonings and even being shot or captured by an irate neighbor and hauled off and dumped God only knows where.

That is why having a dog is a big responsibility and sometimes a big financial cost. I agree that there are dogs who will not allow themselves to be confined and will either dig under a fence or climb or jump over it. I’ve known dogs that will go right over a 6 ft. fence.

But they are in the minority and MOST dogs will stay in a fenced yard. True, there are a few that need extra precautions to keep them from running the neighborhood and then, just as with people, more stringent or harsher methods have to be used, sad to say.

I like your comments pretty much all the time. But this one? Not so much! Why is a dog getting hurt funny . . . even if it’s only a cartoon dog???!!!

Agreed. I don’t know why people read the strip if they hate the characters who ARE just imaginary. In Calvin and Hobbes, no one rags on Calvin’s mom for her reactions to Calvin’s mischief but in this strip Ely would be the horrible mother who only cares about herself.

Was I cruel? I had two dogs until about a year ago. My yard was far from “dog proof”. When I got up in the morning I chained them in the back yard. Before going to work I brought them in the house. I work close to home so I would come home at lunch and chain them for about 20 minutes and then back in the house. After work another 30 minutes or so on the chains and back inside. Before going to bed I would take them for a walk and then they would sleep in the bedroom with me, usually one or both on the bed with me. &nbsp I don’t see Elly as anything other than a harried mom!

Okay…Farley isn’t hooked up all day and night long. He’s allowed in the house frequently. Hooking on a chain to do his “business” and get some fresh air is not, IMHO, inhumane plus he’s safe. I loved his cute little face when the boy first noticed him. :D
